DISTRICT OVERVIEW
Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) serves 5400 students in 11 schools and employs nearly 1500 people. The District was placed into receivership by the State of Massachusetts in Spring 2015 due to struggling performance well below the state average. Dr. Stephen Zrike Jr. a seasoned Massachusetts educator was selected as Receiver to lead this exciting turnaround effort which includes significant autonomy and flexibility from the traditional school system. Since being in receivership the District has experienced many promising school year 2015-16 the District saw a 7-percentage point increase in proficiency in English Language Arts and a 4-point gain in Math and attendance rates are up across the District. HPS has also extended the school day for students in preschool to 8th grade expanded choice programs such as dual language and personalized learning and offering new opportunities to students such as computer science and many other enrichment programs. Job Description:
The tutor will work with individual students in home and/or hopital settings to reinforce areas of the curriculum taught by the primary content teacher; or to work on developing the skills necessary for students to access to curriculum at grade level (i.e. literacy skills numeracy skills language skills organizational skills retention skills social skills etc). The tutor position is part-time (up to 10 hours/week to be determined by the Pupil Services Office) and hourly. The work year is the 180 days of the student calendar. The position requires strong classroom management skills; and motivational skills are essential. Regular communication with participating students parents teachers building administration and others at the request of the building principal about student progress is required.
The ideal candidate will possess a BA degree in a core content area (math science history or English); will have experience teaching school-age students; will have experience working with students with disabilities and/or students who are English Language Learners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree preferably in a core content area
- Experience teaching school aged children
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work cooperatively in a professional setting
- Perseverance and the ability to motivate students to achieve a goal
- Desire to work in an underperforming urban school district in order to improve future outcomes for children
- Preferred: licensed as a teacher or completion of all requirements for licensure
- Experience working in an urban setting preferred
- Experience working with diverse student populations preferred
- Ability to read interpret and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills
