Job Summary

Overview

The USU Campus Security Unit is a non-sworn extension of the Utah State University Police Department (USUPD). Unarmed security officers serve the university community by providing a variety of services that include monitoring the property at USU security escorts building lock/unlock motor vehicle assists event security and campus patrol which provides security for commercial/residential buildings stadiums arenas museums and other facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Providing security at campus events which includes football and basketball games and other student events.
  • Provide personal safety escorts for students.
  • Provide access to locked buildings.
  • Response to non-law enforcement calls for service such as fire alarms.
  • Providing various forms of assistance to university faculty staff and students.
  • Interface with the other departments within public safety.
  • Security camera operation and monitoring.
  • Communication with USU facilities related to utility problems snow removal etc.
  • Use of a public safety radio and learning the Utah 10 Code.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Security Shifts:

  • The Security Unit functions 7 days a week and operates from 6:00 a.m. to midnight including State and Federal Holidays.
  • Security shifts are determined by employee availability and USU Security needs.
  • Part-time officers can work up to 28 hours a week.
  • The security unit which is comprised mostly of students will be allowed to adjust their work schedule to accommodate their school schedule.
  • Security officers will be required to work pregame and game day security assignments for football and basketball games the Howl and Mardi Gras.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrating interpersonal and effective communication skills (written and speaking).
  • Conflict management and resolution skills
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid State Driver License clean driving history and ability to be insured in order to drive university security vehicles.
  • No police/public safety experience required. All training will be provided on the job.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in the use of computers and law enforcement software programs.
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to make procedural decisions and exercise sound judgment.

The work environment and physical requirements will change depending on the assignment. Security Officers will be required to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Indoors work requirements may include working in an office/event space or public space that provides protection from the elements but not necessarily from temperature changes. Indoor assignments may require the use of repetitive hand motion (i.e. typing).


Outdoor assignments will require security officers to be exposed to various weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for extended periods of time. The Security Officer may also be exposed to loud noises vibrations from equipment and conditions that may affect the respiratory system such as fumes odors dust mists gases and poor ventilation. Bending crawling and crouching may be required. Security Officers may be required to lift push and/or pull objects around 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
