Job Summary

The Help Navigator is committed to helping people experiencing homelessness and poverty transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The divisional HELP Navigator will be responsible for supporting and directly working with HELP Clients in collaboration with EPS constables.

Employment Type: Full-time Fixed Term (November to March 2026)
Schedule: Rotational 4 days on 4 days off (7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Diversion (60%)

  • Respond to assist patrol to support vulnerable community members with a basic needs assessment and provide subsequent consultation on appropriate resources or referrals.
  • Proactive community outreach providing emergency supplies and resource information.
  • Engage with clients at the scene of a call in divisional cells at a police division or via telephone.

Documentation and Reporting (15%)

  • Ensures documentation and client files are completed organized and up to date as per HELP business rules.
  • Submit weekly highlights or reports as required.
  • Provide input into program evaluation upon request.
  • Improve overall system performance by identifying and addressing systemic gaps and redundancies.

Case Management (10%)

    • Integrates HELPs mission and values into the development and implementation of
    • client-centered case plans.
    • Facilitate provision of services by navigating clients to appropriate community resources.
    • Meet transport attend client meetings and appointments as required.
    • Work collaboratively with HELP constables other team members and community partners to develop and manage individual case plans.
    • Work with clients who are incarcerated or in the hospital to implement reintegration plans to ensure smooth transition back into the community.
    • Advocate for clients when appropriate.
    • Report to the team lead on daily activities and where applicable the HELP Team Sergeant. to ensure Navigator safety protocols are accounted for.
    • Prioritize tasks take initiative and maintain flexibility in case plans.

    Community Involvement and Leadership (5%)

    • Attending and representing HELP and agency at appropriate internal and external meetings as needed.
    • Represent HELP at community events as directed by HELP leadership.
    • Participates in professional development training.
    • Supports a continued connection between HELP EPS and agency staff.

    Agency Engagement (5%)

    • Complete agency specific administrative tasks.
    • Attend agency directed training and meetings.

    Other (5%)

    • Other duties related to the HELP Program as designated by HELP leadership.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

    Education

    • Degree or Diploma in Social or Human Services or a related field or a minimum of 3 years relevant experience working with complex populations youth and families. It is expected that they maintain and are in good standing with any relevant professional bodies they may be members of.

    Experience and Knowledge

    • Strong understanding and knowledge of community resources knowledge of issues faced by individuals experiencing homelessness poverty and dealing with mental health conditions and substance use.
    • Strong leadership teamwork and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Experience working with and an understanding of the unique challenges that Indigenous and multicultural individuals and families face.
    • Prior experience completing professional documentation.
    • Capacity for conflict resolution.
    • Risk management.
    • Advocacy in systems.
    • Group facilitation.
    • Role and scope navigation.
    • Inclusion and equity.
    • Digital literacy.

    • Passed an Enhanced Security Clearance.
    • Candidate has completed training in Suicide Intervention Standard First Aid Crisis Intervention and De-escalation.


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry we require our employees sign an agreement indicating that they will respect and not detract from our Statement of Faith.â
    • Travel around the city as required.
    • Moderate physical effort needed to successfully accomplish the essential job functions such as keyboarding and entering data in databases.
    • Fast paced and demanding working environment.
    • Moderate amount of walking standing sitting lifting and carrying.
    • Moderate to extreme mental effort required to respond to intense situations including traumatic incidents.
    • Exposed to hazards like that of all law enforcement violence criminal activity rude clientele etc.
    • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behavior up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
      • Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.


    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed.

    • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
