Job Summary

Summary


Help shape how people move through Medford! As the Assistant to the Traffic Engineer you will support safe and efficient travel for all modes by preparing plans for capital projects reviewing private development proposals analyzing traffic safety updating signal timing presenting at public meetings and more. This role is a technical resource within Public Works Engineering preparing clear reports and plans coordinating with internal and external stakeholders and applying multimodal transportation fundamentals aligned with the Citys Transportation System Plan and Transportation Safety Action Plan. Candidates with experience in AutoCAD Synchro and SimTraffic who enjoy translating analysis into practical solutions are encouraged to apply.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in a transportation related field with preference given for additional experience in traffic engineering.
  • Bachelors degree in transportation planning traffic engineering or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possession of the Fundamentals in Engineering (EIT) certificate or registration as a professional traffic or civil engineer in the State of Oregon.
  • Experience in traffic engineering and operations.
  • Experience in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Synchro and SimTraffic.

Available Schedules:

  • 8 hours daily Monday - Friday
  • Opportunity for alternate schedule after the first 90-days:
    • 9-80 (nine-hour workdays with a three-day weekend every other week)
    • 4-10 (four 10-hour days with three days off each week)
    • Telework up to two days/week after the probationary period (with supervisor approval)

The anticipated hiring range for the Assistant to Traffic Engineerposition is $38.48(first step) to $40.40or $42.42(second or third step).The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education experience andqualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay are included in this salary range allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Examples of Job Duties

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Program Operations:
    • Evaluate and document the Citys transportation programs turning data and analysis into clear actionable reports.
    • Assist in preparation and administration of project budgets contracts and grant agreements with consultants and outside agencies.
    • Support efforts to deliver projects on time on budget and aligned with community priorities.
  • Transportation Planning:
    • Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to prepare and implement long-range plans for transportation systems and improvements.
    • Evaluate proposals and provides recommendations for City transportation policies and technical positions.
    • Prepare and review transportation studies including modeling results for proposed transportation alternatives.
  • Transportation Coordination:
    • Serve as a key liaison with other departments governmental agencies citizen groups and local business and industries to share and communicate information and coordinate transportation planning efforts.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations at public meetings on the subject of transportation planning (e.g. project teams citizen groups the Planning Commission and City Council).
    • Foster collaboration and communication to ensure transportation projects reflect community goals.
  • Transportation Design & Development:
    • Contribute to the planning and design of multimodal transportation improvement projects; from new roads and bridges to bike lanes sidewalks street widening traffic signals and roundabouts.
    • Prepare preliminary designs and environmental assessments to move projects from concept to construction.
    • Serve as technical advisor on transportation-related matters.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of transportation standards guidelines requirements and ordinances.
    • Review private development proposals to evaluate transportation impacts.
    • Ensure compliance with federal state and local laws codes and regulations.
    • The scope of the assigned area will depend on the departmental structure and is as the discretion of the department director.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Performs work indoors in an office environment with regulated and minimal environmental conditions. This role involves time spent sitting at a desk working on a computer. The noise level is typically moderate to medium. When fieldwork is required you will be exposed to the elements (rain heat cold) and work within congested traffic areas. The outside work environment can include walking on uneven terrain. This environment may also include interactions with the public.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. This position requires extended periods of standing walking and sitting. Must be able to crouch bend stoop twist turn and balance. The employee regularly operates various office equipment including computers printers copy machines calculators and telephones. Good eyesight hearing balance and dexterity are required.
