The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking a Transportation Planner to assist with travel demand model application activities for the regions long-range transportation plan to support project recommendations. This role plays a key part in needs-based multimodal planning utilizing a travel demand model to simulate and analyze both current conditions and future scenarios ensuring data-driven decision-making for transportation development. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coding and evaluating roadway and transit networks in TransCAD
  • Supporting travel demand model development and implementation
  • Running regional travel demand model (TransCAD) simulations and analyzing outputs to support project recommendations and air quality analyses
  • Analyzing specialized modeling tasks such as managed lane pricing development select link analysis and unconstrained traffic simulations to support regional planning and project evaluation
  • Providing user support for travel demand model applications
  • Assisting the agency and external partners with data and technical requests including the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to ensure consistent and accurate project inputs
  • Conducting needs-based planning activities and evaluating impact to transportation network through various planning scenarios
  • Summarizing and interpreting maps charts tables and reports and communicating model results to the agency and external partners
  • Coordinating travel demand modeling activities with the Model and Data Development program area
  • Preparing and delivering oral presentations
  • Preparing meeting agendas and other supporting documents as needed

Required Skills:

  • Strong communication both written and verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Detail oriented highly organized with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word Outlook PowerPoint and Excel
  • Understanding of transportation and regional planning principles and processes
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with the ability to create maps
  • Working knowledge of travel demand forecasting processes
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools and methods

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in analytical quantitative methods
  • Over one year of work-related experience

Starting Salary Range

Minimum of $63658.79 - $76390.55 annually

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of by and for local governments and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs cooperating for mutual benefit and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOGs purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities eliminate unnecessary duplication and make joint decisions. Since 1974 NCTCOG has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin Dallas Denton Ellis Hood Hunt Johnson Kaufman Parker Rockwall Tarrant and Wise. NCTCOG also serves as a designated recipient for Federal Transit Administration funds.
