Literacy Basic Skills (LBS)/ Core Student Support Instructor

St. Louis Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centre


The Waterloo Catholic District School Board with a total student population of 38000 provides services to students in 50 schools (Kindergarten to Grade 12) across the Waterloo Region.

The WCDSB also operates numerous Adult Learning and Continuing Education programs through St. Louis Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centres.

General Description of Program:

The Literacy and Basic Skills programs are funded by the Ministry of Labour Immigration Training and Skills Development. You will report to the LBS (CorE) Program Manager.


General Description of Duties:

  • Planning and delivering literacy numeracy and digital training to adult learners both in person and online
  • Creating and maintaining a positive learning environment
  • Engaging students through a variety of activities
  • Developing a customized learner plan in co-operation with each learner and in accordance to LBS Program Guidelines; updating and adjusting this plan according to the learner goals abilities and interests
  • Tracking and assessing learner progress using a variety of assessment methods and tools appropriate to the adult learning environment
  • Proctoring exams as needed
  • Completing and submitting all statistical information and attendance records
  • Supporting learners during next-step transitions
  • Attending CorE staff meetings and professional development opportunities


Minimum Requirements:

  • A 3-year post-secondary degree
  • 1 year experience teaching adults and a demonstrated ability to relate to a wide variety of adult learners
  • Excellent written/oral communications and math skills
  • Ability to adjust instructional style for working one-on-one with learners with various learning styles and needs
  • Computer skills: working knowledge of Word Excel Outlook and Explorer (Power Point an asset)
  • Available for in-person classes
  • Eligible to work in Canada


Desirable Assets:

  • Comfort supporting math and science learners
  • D2L competencies
  • Awareness of trauma informed practices
  • Teacher of Adults Literacy Educator Certificate recommended
  • Knowledge of Literacy and Basic Skills Program Guidelines and Essential Skills
  • Understanding of and demonstrated use of andragogical principles in the adult learning environment
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF)
  • Responsible enthusiastic and positive with an ability to work as a team and adapt to a changing environment.

Main campus - 80 Young Street Kitchener


Hours of Work : On call as needed

Core Essentials (In Class & Supporting Remote)

Mondays - Thursdays Mornings 8:45 am -11:45 am

Afternoons 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm


Core Essentials (Synchronous)

Mondays - Thursdays Mornings 9:15 am - 11:45 am

Afternoons 12:45 pm - 3:15 pm


Core Essentials (Student Support)

Mondays & Thursdays Mornings 8:45 am - 11:45 am

Afternoon 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Tuesday & Wednesdays Mornings 8:45 am - 11:45 am

Lunches 11:45 am - 12:30 pm

Afternoons 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Evenings 3:30 pm - 7:45 pm

Rate of Pay: $40.13/hour (plus Statutory & vacation pay)
