Essential Job Duties

Performs a variety of duties relating to and resulting in the synthesis of High Explosives and the formulation of Plastic Bonded High Explosives in support of various production research and development projects. Typical general functions of this classification include:

  • Configures and operates various pieces of specialized industrial and laboratory scale processing equipment and instrumentation
  • Weigh mix transfer heat and dry large quantities of hazardous chemicals and explosives using industrial equipment
  • Performs and records calculations (arithmetic and algebraic) in the course of synthesis and formulation operations
  • Collects and records data using manual calculator-assisted and computer techniques
  • Performs associated duties as assigned within the work areas to ensure proper inventory control and housekeeping incidental to care and protection of equipment records and procedures
  • Performs work with a high degree of accuracy in all phases of duties under general supervision
  • Assists professional staff as required in identifying problems and in establishing new and improved procedures and techniques
  • Requires the application of good judgment and skill in the performance of critical data assignments
  • Precisely follows prescribed safety procedures in handling explosive toxic flammable or otherwise hazardous materials
  • Demonstrates the ability to methodically perform specified tasks and assigned functions
  • Ensures that operations are conducted according to applicable environmental safety health and management requirements
  • Observes and reports unusual occurrences or events that may affect safety quality or understanding of experiments or operations
  • Assists professional staff with the training of other Engineering Technicians as assigned
  • Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal State Department of Energy (DOE) Corporate and Plant rules regulations Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 5480.19) and Management
  • Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls
  • Understands a workers right to stop work when they feel their own or others personal safety is jeopardized
  • Attends all required safety meetings and training; offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment

SYNTHESIS AND FORMULATION

  • Sets up and operates processing equipment in both the High Explosive Synthesis Facility and formulation facilities
  • Sets up and operates various systems and instruments for in-process monitoring and process control
  • Works safely with hazardous chemicals and explosives in mixers pumps vessels reactors and ovens

Skills and Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to perform all duties and functions outlined above
  • Must meet initial employment requirements
  • Must be able to read write and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation
  • All qualifications work history training and education are to be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof; must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18-month period

Education

  • Satisfactory completion of 12 semester hours of relevant college level Chemical Engineering or Chemistry (including associated laboratories) and 6 semester hours of college math specifically in college Algebra and Trigonometry.
  • OR four (4) years of recent experience in a chemical plant or laboratory performing hands-on chemical engineering operations. Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18-month period.
  • OR any combination of the above college credit courses and equivalent experience to equal four (4) years. Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18-month period.

Functional Requirements

  • Lifting or carrying less than 40 pounds
  • Straight pulling or pushing (1 hour/day)
  • Reaching above shoulder level

  • Repetitive motion of the wrist/forearm

  • Normal far vision in at least one eye correctable to 20/40 (20 feet)
  • Near vision (must be able to read computer screen manuscript book etc. at approximately 13-16 inches from face)
  • Depth perception (ability to tell how close or far an object is)
  • No evidence of current drug or alcohol abuse
  • Ability to use small tools
  • Ability to perform safety-sensitive duties

Notes
