For Volvo cars the future is electric meaning that all future drivelines need to achieve the highest sustainability without compromising the user experience. To deliver this balancing act as a vehicle design automation through machine learning is a prominent tool used in the industry. Recent automation applications of the Large Language Models (LLM) include Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling leading to reduced complexity for engineering design.
The MSc project aims to use Volvo Cars concept models to teach an LLM agent how to perform design and dimensioning of vehicle components using FEM in industry-relevant detail. Accordingly students are expected to implement an automation pipeline comprising Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) using Python to read text-based databases for FEM models (available tutorials but also papers and concept vehicle models). This framework will then be able to launch FEM computations automatically for the user-prompted performance index of relevance. The project will be performed locally using the trained LLM in a sandbox.
The work will mainly be done using open-source FEM software on site at Volvo Cars in Torslanda Gothenburg.
We expect that the applying students have studied physics mathematics electrical engineering or similar and are comfortable with automation pipelines and scripting. The student(s) are also expected to be present on site at Volvo Cars in Gothenburg during most of the thesis work and any living arrangements need to be organized by the student(s).
The work will start in January 2026; the exact date is to be discussed
