HEAnet - Student Network Engineer

HEAnet is Irelands National Research and Education Network providing internet connectivity and ICT shared services across all levels of the Irish education system reaching in excess ofend users. We connect learners and researchers across all of Ireland to education resources and to fellow national educational and research networks in Europe and the rest of the world.

We are seeking a Student Network Engineer to join our Networks Team.

This role isbased in our Dublin 1 office with theoption to work from homeunder our flexible remote working framework.

The Networks team are responsible for the day-to-day operation of HEAnets Network. As Irelands National Research & Education Network we operate a large Internet Service Provider network providing internet access and other services to researchers and students across all levels of education & research.


Daily operations tasks include installation maintenance and monitoring of more than 250 sites and hundreds of network addition to day-to-day tasks the Networks Team have multiple projects underway at any given time.

Recent projects include a full hardware refresh of edge equipment a new datacentre network installation and the development of a new network automation and provisioning platform.


Future projects include the expansion of Netbox as a single-source-of-truth platform modernisation of graphing and performance monitoring tools and a national scale project to refresh nearly 200 client premises devices which will include the building of new automation tooling.


What you will be doing

We are seeking a student who has an interest in gaining real world experience in network technologies and internet infrastructure and ideally someone who is interested in learning about network automation and orchestration using tools like Python and Ansible.

  • Juniper Networks hardware platforms and JunOS Operating System
  • Network routing technologies including BGP IS-IS MPLS
  • Optical Networking including CWDM DWDM and Coherent Optics
  • Datacentre Environments and Networking
  • Python Programming for Workflow Automation
  • Ansible Automation
  • Netbox
  • Streaming Telemetry


What we are looking for

  • A candidate who is familiar with basic networking concepts with an interest in Internet technologies and infrastructure
  • A candidate interested in learning how software development tools like Python are used to automate network operations
  • Good written and verbal communication.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute as part of a collaborative team.
