The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Division of Urban Forestry is hiring for one (1)Nursery Worker I position located in Wahiawa. Nursery Worker Is propagate cultivate fertilize and otherwise care for plants in a nursery.

What Youll Do
  • Propagate cultivate water stake re-stake tie prune fertilize transplant repot plants etc.
  • Care for accessioned display and landscape plants in the nurseries and in the garden.
  • Install operate repair and maintain irrigation system and timers.
  • Maintain garden in a neat and presentable condition by mowing string trimming spraying mulching and hauling rubbish.
  • Apply pesticides to control insects weeds and diseases.
  • Operates flatbed truck to move horticultural equipment and supplies to job sites supplies from outside vendors and to refuel vehicles and fill gas cans.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Special Work Requirements
  • Exposure to horticultural chemicals working on steep wet grades in water rocky uneven slopes and low precipices etc. wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Required to work weekends holidays and evenings for seven day/week operations special events and emergency response.
  • May serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants including the propagation of various plants.

Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants their care and propagation; practices tools equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them; various commercial fertilizers and their use etc.And the ability to do grafting air-layering and seed germination; identify various plants; recognize common plant diseases insects and pests; use common tools and equipment used in nursery work; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Substitution: Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State drivers license as required.

The current vacancies may require the following licenses and certificates:
  1. Valid Hawaii drivers license (Type 3) prior to appointment.
  2. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) prior to appointment.
  3. Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test prior to appointment.
  4. First Aid/CPR/AED certificates prior to completion of probation.
NOTE: Some of the above certificates are obtained during the pre-employment medical evaluation process. Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
