A Day in the Life of a Planner I
As a Planner you will be part of an interdisciplinary team that delivers multimodal transportation projects with a focus on active transportation (bicycle pedestrian and micromobility). Our Seattle office serves all of the Puget Sound Olympic and Northwest regions with current work for communities throughout the state of Washington. Additionally Seattle staff have opportunities to contribute to projects from throughout the country collaborating with leading national experts in active transportation. We work on multimodal corridor studies; Vision Zero Safe Routes to School and Safety Action Plans; trails greenways and wayfinding plans; and Complete Streets and streetscape plans. We push ourselves and our clients to proactively think about equity every step of the way.
In the Planner I role you will contribute to projects lead analysis represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. Youll work collaboratively with teams of planners landscape architects urban designers and engineers. Typical types of project work you can expect include data analysis; production of maps graphics and presentations; community engagement; plan writing; and occasional field work.
We are targeting a salary range of $66000-$78000 for this position.
Qualifications of a Planner I:
- A bachelors or masters degree (or additional work experience) in urban planning or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience
- Proficiency using Excel for data and demographic analysis experience with ArcGIS and/or QGIS and creating webmaps
- Strong writing skills
- Experience in graphic production in Adobe Creative Suite including data visualization graphic design and document layout
- Strong cultural competency with people from backgrounds different than your own
It would be a plus if you have:
- Prior planning experience
- Prior consulting experience even as an intern
- Fluency in Spanish
- Experience with bicycle and pedestrian projects
- Experience conducting public outreach and engagement

The Seattle office of Toole Design is conveniently located in the heart of Seattles Business District blocks from the Pike Place Market Seattle Art Museum Central Public Library and Waterfront. The office is easily accessed on foot by bicycle and via transit or ferry. RapidRide lines C D and E along with multiple local bus routes stop right in front and Sound Transit light rail and multiple Sounder Commuter rail lines are a block from the office. Bike lanes are close by on 2nd and 4th avenues.
