Job Summary

JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant ESL WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Principal and Teacher(s) assigned

DEPT. /CAMPUS: Assigned Campus DATE REVISED: October 2025

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist the teacher in the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements. Work under the supervision of a certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or its recognized equivalent and meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (defined as completion of 48 semester hours or equivalent trimester hours) of college coursework or an applicable number of semester hours as defined by the institution of higher education attended whichever is less;
  2. Possess an associate (or higher) degree; or
  3. Meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a local academic assessment
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading writing and mathematics; or
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness writing readiness and mathematics readiness as appropriate.

Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with children

Knowledge of general school office equipment

Communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Fluent in English and Spanish (Bilingual/ESL assistant only )

Experience:

Some experience working with children.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Uphold and enforce school rules administrative regulations and state and local board policy.
  2. Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  3. Work with individual students or groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  4. Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  5. Assist in supervising students throughout the school day both inside and outside the classroom.
  6. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
  7. Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
  8. Assist in inventory care and maintenance of equipment.
  9. Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  10. Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as needed.
  11. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  12. Maintain positive interaction with staff students and parents.
  13. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

EQUIPMENT USED:

Uses copier typewriter computer and audiovisual equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Moderate standing stooping bending and lifting.
