Summary

The Department of Theatre and Film invites applications for a renewable Qualified Rank Assistant Teaching Professor specializing in theatre history. This is a 9-month appointment beginning on August 10 2026.

Information about Program and College

The Department of Theatre and Film at Bowling Green State University has 17 full-time faculty 6 full-time staff 220 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate students. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in Film with concentrations in Cinematography and Editing; Film History and Analysis; and Writing Directing and Producing and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with specializations in Acting and Directing; Design and Technical Theatre; and Musical Theatre. The department also offers minors in Film Theatre Dance and Arts Management. At the graduate level the department offers Master of Arts and Doctoral degrees in Theatre. The department has robust production programs in both theatre and film. There are three student organizations focused on film; three focused on theatre; and one focused on dance. The department is dedicated to fostering a creative and intellectual community that values the commitment to artistic growth and practice critical thinking community and well-being and the centrality of liberal arts education. To that end the faculty of the department guide and support students with an emphasis on the following core values: Creativity Collaboration Communication Commitment and Community.

The Department of Theatre and Film is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College aligned with the universitys strategic plan is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the worlds challenges and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. We achieve this through robust collaboration across departmental boundaries with particular attention given to increasing experiential learning for our undergraduate and graduate students and connecting our scholarly and creative work to the needs of our region. Essential Functions

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in theatre/performance history and literature and global theatre/performance; contributing to the departments theatre production program; and potentially teaching graduate courses in the candidates area of expertise. The individual hired for this position must have a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and ability to contribute to the theatre production program through directing and/or design. The typical load for Qualified Rank Faculty is four courses per term with the possibility of reassigned time for teaching-related activity done in the context of the departments production program. Qualified Rank Faculty in the department also have service duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD or DFA in theatre. ABD will not be considered.
Instructor of record teaching undergraduate theatre/performance history and literature.
Demonstrated record of directing and/or designing in university or professional theatre.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated record of teaching courses in global theatre/performance.
Demonstrated record of teaching courses in pre-20^th century theatre/performance history.
Demonstrated research productivity.
