Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Nutrition Manager the Kitchen Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a school kitchen site to ensure safe efficient and high-quality food service in compliance with USDA Child Nutrition program guidelines. This position supervises and trains kitchen staff maintains accurate records ensures food safety standards and supports student wellness and participation through well-prepared meals and service.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years of experience in foodservice involving quantity cooking
  • ServSafe and School Nutrition Association certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Menu & Production Management

  • Forecast food and supply needs for menus a la carte classroom snack and catering services.
  • Create and maintain daily food production records preparation lists and required signage.
  • Ensure food quantities are accurate to meet demand while minimizing waste.

Inventory Ordering & Procurement

  • Manage inventory levels place orders and receive deliveries following HACCP standard operating procedures.
  • Follow USDA procurement guidelines in alignment with the districts procure plan.
  • Conduct year-end food supply and equipment inventory; ensure proper summer close-down.

Food Safety & Equipment

  • Enforce food safety practices including temperature checks proper cleaning/sanitizing and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Monitor and record equipment temperatures; initiate and track work orders for needed repairs.
  • Open and prepare the kitchen daily ensuring equipment is ready and food safety standards are met; complete end-of-day close-down procedures.

Staff Supervision & Training

  • Provide day-to-day supervision guidance and training for a team of 7-9 variable hour cooks.
  • Deliver daily feedback conduct performance evaluations and maintain staff documentation.
  • Develop job duties delegate tasks and cross-train staff in all kitchen responsibilities.

Cash Handling & Point of Sale (POS)

  • Train cashiers on reimbursable meal regulations and proper POS procedures.
  • Ensure all sales including a la carte are recorded through student accounts or POS system.
  • Verify daily bank deposits and oversee accurate cash handling.
  • Contact parents regarding negative student accounts.

Special Diets & Student Safety

  • Assist with the management of special diet requests by reviewing menus and guidelines provided by the Director and or Dietitian.
  • Read and verify food labels to ensure student safety and prevent cross-contamination.
  • Communicate with parents staff and administration to maintain safe dietary practices for students.

Program Promotion & Participation

  • Encourage student participation by suggesting special menus and promoting nutrition programs.
  • Participate in school and district events as needed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Engages in professional development related to functions and responsibilities.
  • Completes required training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of HACCP standards USDA Child Nutrition Program guidelines and food safety practices.
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment and its safe use
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise and train staff effectively
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills for POS systems production records and inventory management

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Frequent standing and walking; moderate squatting crouching and bending
  • Frequent carrying and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to kitchen equipment and food products
  • Work is performed in a kitchen environment
