Job Summary

Agence France-Presse is seeking a dynamic English-language journalist to cover macro-economic news in its busy Washington DC office AFPs main hub for North America.

Working under the direction of the North America editorial management you will write and edit stories at ground zero for the US economy where trade and economic policy developments can have dramatic implications for the world.

While the eco team reports on a huge range of financial and business news from the stock market to company earnings and labor disputes your focus as a macroeconomic journalist will primarily be on Federal Reserve policy and international financial institutions like the IMF and the World Bank. You will also work in close coordination with the other DC-based anglo macroeconomic journalist who specializes in Treasury news and trade relations.

The brief extends much further though to explore how economic issues and interests intersect with everything from tech & AI to climate change and high-stakes diplomacy.

Excellent writing skills accuracy and attention to detail are required along with strong news judgement. You must be able to react quickly to breaking developments synthesize complex economic issues and put them in a broader global context for an international audience.

A premium is placed on concise and snappy articles. You also will translate stories from French albeit with the help of translation tools.

In the gaps in the breaking news you will get out of the office as much as possible to build up a strong contacts portfolio and to look for original angles to explain the American economy to the world especially with strong visual stories that lend themselves to video photos and graphics.

The hours can be long and include occasional weekends as we cover the worlds biggest economy where government policy can change on a dime. Grace under pressure is essential: we regularly juggle multiple story lines simultaneously and have to jump onto breaking stories at a moments notice.

You must be a team player flexible and able to maintain a sense of humor while multitasking.

You must ensure the reliability of our news coverage and respect for the agencys editorial policy.

It is important to stress that all AFP journalists contribute to AFPs newsgathering process in all formats working for the common goal of reacting and producing high quality multimedia journalism. Text journalists may write for the wire but their journalism is vital for video dopesheets picture captions and graphics. Our visual journalists also play a significant role in the gathering of information for the text wires.

You must respect guidelines for using social networks as an AFP journalist (available on Inside). You may contribute to AFPs efforts to tackle disinformation led by the digital verification team and a dedicated disinformation correspondent. You will support new tools and practices in a fast-evolving media landscape

You will ensure that events on AFPs integrated calendar system Iris360 are up to date to enable our clients and our bureaux to plan for upcoming news events and their coverage.

In an ever-changing media environment the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

This is a local-hire position and eligible candidates should ideally have authorization to live and work in the United States.
