Job Summary

Corporate Hiring Solutions Inc. (CoHires) recruiting partner for SUNY Oneonta is in search of the Chief of Police for SUNY Oneonta campus. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and community-oriented law enforcement leader to join a nationally recognized public university that values inclusion service and student success.
Located in the scenic foothills of New Yorks Catskill Mountains SUNY Oneonta enrolls approximately 6000 students across more than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs. The University Police Department (UPD) operates 24/7 with 18 sworn officers and 6 dispatchers dedicated to ensuring a safe welcoming and inclusive environment for students staff and visitors.
Position Details
Title: Chief of Police
Location: SUNY Oneonta Oneonta New York
Reports To: University President
Employment Type: Full-time Leadership (Administrative)
Anticipated Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
Work Schedule: On-site full-time with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities
The Chief of Police provides strategic administrative and operational leadership to the University Police Department. This position plays a vital role in promoting campus safety maintaining public trust and advancing SUNY Oneontas mission of inclusion equity and student success.
Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Lead and manage all law enforcement safety and emergency management functions for the campus.
  • Foster a culture of community policing and engagement that supports students faculty and staff.
  • Develop and implement policies that align with SUNY standards accreditation requirements and state law.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness crisis response and threat-assessment programs.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with local state and federal agencies.
  • Recruit train and mentor diverse law enforcement personnel.
  • Serve as the Presidents advisor on campus safety and emergency matters.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Public Administration or a related field.
Ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or command role.
Strong background in emergency management crisis response and community policing.
Excellent interpersonal communication and leadership skills.
NYS certification as a police officer and graduation from an accredited police academy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or micro-credential in Criminal Justice Public Administration Emergency Management or Higher Education Leadership.
  • Advanced coursework or micro-credential in Emergency Management.
  • Specialized training in active shooter/violent intruder response protocols.
  • Documented leadership in major incident response including multi-agency coordination.
  • Experience managing protests and demonstrations with an emphasis on de-escalation First Amendment awareness and non-confrontational engagement.
  • Expertise in designing and leading emergency drills table-top exercises and after-action reviews.
  • Experience in threat assessment and behavioral intervention including multidisciplinary risk management.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining diverse law enforcement personnel.
  • Partnership-building experience with police academies ROTC programs and community colleges to develop future officer pipelines.
  • Experience developing comprehensive training programs for onboarding continuing education and specialized campus policing.
  • Instructor certification or facilitation experience in crisis intervention de-escalation or mental health first aid.
