Job Description
The Financial Aid Counselor performs a variety of clerical analytical and other essential duties in support of the Financial Aid Office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Answers general questions regarding federal student aid programs (FAFSA PELL Direct Stafford Loans grants and scholarships including private loans etc.)
- Provides information and assistance in completing the FAFSA application.
- Monitors student progress in the financial aid process while helping as necessary including follow up requests for documents such as verification requirements IRS transcripts and other eligibility requirements.
- Monitor student enrollment status analyze award eligibility and file verification.
- Collaborates with other departments to identify aid from various sources (institution state federal and private)
- Monitor students Satisfactory Academic Progress to ensure continued eligibility for financial aid from all sources.
- Performs accurate data entry.
- Monitor students completion of the required entrance counseling exit counseling and signing of the Master Promissory Note.
- Responds to requests from students and/or parents in person or in writing on inquiries regarding financial aid programs and eligibility.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participates at special events (information sessions orientations workshops etc.)
- Participates in special projects on an as-needed basis.
- Participate in continuing professional development activities.
- Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Proficient in MS Office Word Excel Teams and Outlook.
- Knowledge in the use of Financial Aid software Jenzabar FA preferred but not required.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-faced environment.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong interpersonal oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students faculty staff and outside agencies.
- Demonstrates attention to detail.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and is open to changes and improvements.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelors degree required
- Two years of experience working with student services in a higher education setting or in a related industry is desired although not required.
