Telework:This position has the flexibility to work remotely however the duty station is in Tumwater Washington and the successful candidate must agree to travel to the office for key scheduled meetings or as operational needs dictate. As an Excise Tax Examiner 3 in the Public Works unit you will independently resolve the most complex excise tax examinations to ensure proper liability and distribution provide expert consultation to other staff on mission critical systems laws rules policies and procedures.
Additionally a senior level examiner on the team plans and conducts training for internal and external audiences and administers the Public Works Contract program as well as assist with the Corporate Dissolution Program.
In the course of your duties you will:
Analyze research correct issue and collect outstanding taxes on Public Works Contract audits. This will include detailed review of the Notice of Completion from the awarding agency and review of reconciliation and taxpayer account.
Build strong working relationships by providing expert consultation to construction contractors municipalities department staff and others.
- Collect taxes owed by filing retainage liens.
- Build your teamwork skills.
- Be flexible to competing work needs.
You will also have the opportunity to train other examiners in the Public Works Contracts process.Qualifications

- Knowledge of theory and practice of accounting and auditing; Washington Revenue Act of 1935 (as amended); rules policies and procedures of the Department of Revenue or general investigative techniques; unclaimed property laws; probate laws governing escheats; descent and distribution wills duties of personal representative and legislative process.

- Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously ensuring timely completion.
- Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization priority time method etc. to meet deadlines.
Communication (Written and verbal)
- Ability to convey complex information in laymans terms to generate understanding and reach agreement.
- Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner.
- Experience communicating effectively and professionally in both verbal and written form.
- Experience composing written communication that effectively convey ideas or information to the intended reader.

- Effectively able to translate complex technical concepts into understandable instructions.
- Utilizing negotiation and persuasion skills to de-escalate and obtain buy in.

Preference may be granted to candidates who possess the following:
- 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of accountingAND one year as an Excise Tax Examiner 2 or two years Department of Revenue experience at the journey level in accounting auditing compliance or tax administration provided the required accounting course work has been completed (12 semester or 18 quarter hours).
- A Bachelors degree involving major study in business or public administration or closely allied field with a minimum of 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of accounting and one year of accounting or auditing experience. Accounting or auditing experience may be substituted year for year for education provided the required accounting course work has been completed.
