Garrett Theological Seminary invites applications for an open-rank faculty position in Pastoral Care and Counseling to begin on July 1 2026.
Selected candidates will have academic and professional expertise inpastoral care and counseling and chaplaincy particularly from trauma-informed and intercultural perspectives. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate significant experience working with diverseindividuals and communities as well as a commitment to theological education theological scholarship and the formation of pastoral leaders in a variety of settings.
The successful candidate will teach students across the curriculum including in the masters and doctoral programs and in other curricular initiatives related to the seminarys strategic plan. They will be expected to teach in a variety of modalities including in-person hybrid and online. The candidate will also advise students in our PhD DMin and masters programs and make constructive and collaborative contributions to the institutional and community life of the Seminary. The position requires in-person teaching mentoring and clinical supervision of students. Thus the candidate must be willing to relocate to or within a reasonable commuting distance of the Evanston/Chicago IL area.
The ideal qualifications for this position are:
- A disciplinary home in Pastoral Theology/Pastoral Care; strength in constructive pastoral theology; competency in trauma-informed and qualitative/practice-based methods; ability to teach for congregational intercultural and public contexts.
- A Ph.D. or Th.D. in pastoral theology practical theology or religion and psychology with a demonstrated record of theological research and teaching in a seminary/divinity context; . (or equivalent) ideal.
- Professional experience as clinician/pastoral counselor/chaplain; ACPE CPE Educator/Supervisor credential or record of building/overseeing CPE partnerships; active clinical licensure (LCPC/LCSW/LMFT or equivalent) and/or chaplaincy board certification (BCC).
- Demonstrated teaching experience in online hybrid and on-campus modalities.
- A record of scholarly engagements and publications along with a trajectory of scholarly research and writing.
- Active participation in academic and professional associations.
- Excellent collegial skills to form working relationships in an interdisciplinary context with faculty staff clergy and laity
- Demonstrated commitments that align with the seminarysvision missionand identity.
