The Laboratory Safety Specialist serves as a critical member of the Environmental Health & Safety Department supporting safe laboratory operations by ensuring the functionality and testing of safety equipment. Reporting to the University Radiation Safety Officer with a dotted line report to the University Chemical Hygiene Officer the Lab Safety Specialist supports the University laser safety program by inspecting lasers in the field maintaining the laser inventory and assisting with the annual laboratory inspections of radiation safety/X-ray equipment. The Lab Safety Specialist also supports the Chemical Hygiene program by testing safety showers and chemical fume hoods across campus.
The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the universitys motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Required Qualifications
Education
Highschool diploma
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Basic understanding of laboratory hazards.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook Word Excel).
Demonstrated effective interpersonal relations skills.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative.
Preferred Qualifications
A bachelors degree in a related field.
Working knowledge of the OSHA Laboratory Safety Standard
Laboratory safety experience in an academic environment.
Fume hood testing experience.
Safety shower testing experience.
Working knowledge of radiation standards and regulations.
