Job Summary

The Hearing Test Technician is responsible for performing newborn screening hearing exams on all newborns prior to discharge. The technician is responsible for monitoring the daily census performing screenings prior to discharge documenting results discussing results with parents and entering charges into the billing system. The technician will report to the Hearing Screening Coordinator and Division Administrator.

with neonates (birth to 1 month) and infants (1 month to 1 year)
established protocols for performing newborn hearing screening on all newborns prior to discharge. Enter patient information into the computer system. Prepare the newborn for the screening test and perform test.
screening results in Epic medical record. Communicate with parents/guardian and/or staff that the test has been performed. Provide written documentation for the parents and staff per protocol.
adequate stock supplies for the program. Inform coordinator of any supply needs. Ensure the equipment is in perfect working order prior to testing. Contact coordinator regarding any equipment issues.
findings for all screenings in the medical record and program logs.
screenings enter all results into Epic and program records as directed by the Audiologist. Investigate missing demographic information when necessary.
follow-up appointments for audiological evaluation for infants who do not pass screening. Communicate date time and place of appointment to parents and program coordinator.
in all on-unit continuing education programs. Attend training in-services as scheduled. Assist the coordinator/director in training new students to the hearing program.

Previous experience conducting hearing screenings or working in a healthcare setting 0-1 year preferred

The technician needs to be able to:

- Review daily census and prioritize the schedule to insure all patients are screened prior to discharge.

- Use the screening equipment and recognize if there is a problem prior to completing the examination.

- Handle newborns to insure their comfort safety and readiness to test.

- Document results in the medical record.

- Communicate effectively with parents family members and the medical/nursing staff to relay screening results and answer questions

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with audiology equipment and testing procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients of diverse backgrounds and age groups.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately record and document information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team demonstrating professionalism and collaboration.
- Knowledge of medical terminology related to audiology and hearing disorders.
- Understanding of patient confidentiality and privacy regulations.


Additional Job Details (if applicable)

The screening hearing test technician works in and adjacent to the nurseries on CWN Floors 9 and 10 as well as in the NICU. There are the normal levels of medical equipment noise as well as infants crying. The technician must wheel the screening equipment on a cart from unit to unit. The technician will spend several hours at a time hours on his/her feet and must bend from the waist over infants cribs to attach screening equipment and comfort infants.
