The City and County of Denver has announced furlough days or unpaid days off for most employees to meet a budget shortfall in 2025. There are two fixed furlough days for all limited (temporary positions with an end date) and unlimited (permanent) employees on August 29th the Friday before Labor Day and November 28th the day after Thanksgiving. If you receive an offer for this position your annual pay will determine whether you are required to take additional furlough days. Details will be discussed during the offer process for selected candidate(s).

Location & Schedule

The standard working hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; however in this role you can also expect to work rotating nights and weekend shifts. The home base for this position will be 5440 Roslyn St. Denver CO 80216.

The DOTI Transportation Operations Team is seeking a determined and hardworking individual to serve as a Traffic Signal Technician I. The Transportation Operations Team is responsible for the operation maintenance installation and emergency repair of traffic control devices. They maintain a fiber optic communication network providing services to the DOTI Information Technology Division and Denver Police Department. They also operate the Transportation Management Center and are responsible for signals electronics repair utility locates sign installation sign manufacturing and pavement markings. Our team are stewards of safety in a traffic-controlled work zone. This job environment is working with crew members who are punctual and thrive in a team setting. Commitment and being on time at work is essential.

Specifically as the Traffic Signal Technician I you will:

  • Complete general maintenance of traffic signals.

  • Learn on the job with the senior technicians about monitoring and programming traffic signal timing controllers and make necessary adjustments under the direction of a lead worker or supervisor.

  • Use multi-meters to read voltage/ohms in the field and in the shop.

  • Work in all weather conditions to assist with basic wiring splicing phasing out intersections as well as work in heights up to the luminaire (35 feet) concrete work shoveling building caissons and conduit work.

  • Gain experience and assist with installing removing and repairing signal control and auxiliary equipment such as traffic signal controllers and cabinets and work with vehicle detection installs.

  • Learn how to evaluate and assist with construction by interpreting blueprints schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Complete vehicle detection which will involve walking behind the concrete/pavement saw and air compressor.

  • Operate vehicles and perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection to ensure proper functioning which includes checking fluid levels observing leaks monitoring condition of hoses and belts checking tire pressure ensuring brake lights and lights work and performing other related inspections.

  • Follow all common safety practices associated with tools and equipment monitoring work environment for safety and hazards and ensuring safety for self and others; in addition you will maintain the equipment and tools for the next scheduled crew.

  • Place and remove barricades cones and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas for construction and maintenance projects in accordance with traffic regulation requirements.

  • Use Cartograph and MS Office Suite to log record and create daily work reports for management.

  • Assist with investigation of complaints and reports of defective traffic signals and associated equipment.

  • Drive regular pick up and bucket trucks operate skid steers and mini excavators (if you have your CDL A you may operate to haul out the trailer that transports equipment).

What Youll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience skills and characteristics:

  • Two years of experience in the field/shop with construction of traffic signals installation maintenance or repair.

  • Basic wiring splicing electrical skills.

  • Class A CDL

  • Basic computer skills using MS Office and familiarity with asset management systems.

  • Current IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Certification (preffered but not required).

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience in traffic signal installation construction maintenance or repair.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

  • Licenses/Certifications: This job requires driving. Requires a valid Drivers License at the time of application. Requires a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL B) with appropriate endorsements by the end of probation. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
