Background

Axis communications has a growing number of products which includes paging systems with horn speakers.

Simplified a horn speaker is a way of increasing the efficiency of a transducer by improving the acoustic impedance matching.

This is done by feeding the high impedance speaker driver output into a confined space the throat of the horn which is also a high impedance.

The expanding area of the horn in front of the speaker works as a slowly decreasing acoustic impedance until the sound waves reaches the open air which is a low impedance.

This design comes with the drawback that the pressure variations of the sound is large in a small space. And sound speed varies with pressure so that sound travels faster at higher pressure levels.

Goal

  • Investigate the wave steepening effect on sound in horn speakers and ways to counter measure this effect.
  • Implement and evaluate a way to cancel out the wave steepening effect.

Who are you

For this thesis proposal we target students with a strong interest in audio electronics software and signal processing. Most likely you are studying a master program in electronics engineering or engineering physics.
