Job Summary

The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah Foundation Inc. (ACLU-UT) seeks to hire a self-motivated and passionate Community Engagement Associate. The ACLU-UT operates through public education legal action and legislative and community advocacy to enhance and defend the civil rights and freedoms of everyone living in or visiting Utah.The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate skill and experience in community outreach advocacy volunteer management policy research and analysis and communication.

Position Overview and Functions:

The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative and strong interpersonal skills to mobilize and empower community members across Utah to achieve short- and long-term objectives that further the mission of the ACLU-UT. This includes fostering relationships developing community programs coalition building and advocating for positive change.The Community Engagement Associate will report directly to the Director of Community Engagement and work collaboratively with members of the campaigns policy communications legal and development staff.

The Community Engagement Associate is a Full-Time Salaried Non-Exempt position that will work under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement. This position is classified as For-Cause after the defined 6-month probationary period as indicated in our affiliate Handbook.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement the Community Engagement Associate will promote participation in local and state advocacy and issue campaigns; assist in public education efforts; build an active base of community advocates who can be mobilized to participate in the policymaking process on the state and local levels; manage a volunteer leadership program that educates and empowers the community; and foster relationships with varied and diverse communities to advance our civil rights and civil liberties goals and campaigns.

Essential Job Functions

Coalition and Community Advocacy
  • In collaboration with the entire Campaigns team cultivate and support relationships with local leaders community members businesses and other organizations to create partnerships across a range of organization-prioritized issue areas.Maintain an up-to-date database of contacts.
  • Support ACLU-UT coalitions and allies as assigned by the Director of Community Engagement accurately representing the ACLU-UT and its positions during meeting participation.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Policy on connecting coalitions community members and constituents to legislative work at the state local and municipal levels.

Program Engagement and Implementation
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement coordinate and staff targeted community outreach events and meetings to engage and educate community members facilitate discussions foster collaboration and build trust through accurate and reliable representation of the ACLU-UTs work and priorities. Activities include communication with event hosts organizing tabling details and volunteers event promotion in collaboration with the Communications team and managing event execution.
  • Act as primary liaison between volunteers and staff developing and providing all necessary information guidance training and assistance.
  • Gather information analyze trends and report on the progress of campaigns and projects.
  • Apply the campaign strategies in the ACLU Program and Strategy Playbook to create and implement ACLU-UT projects.

Public Education and Communication
  • Lead the ACLU-UT Pride season activities managing the calendar event participation and volunteer engagement.
  • Assist the Director of Community Engagement in the development and execution of the annual ACLU-UT Block Party managing volunteer participation new member recruitment and member appreciation.
  • Develop materials to conduct volunteer trainings on ACLU-UT priorities and volunteer opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Communications department on deploying digital strategies to expand the ACLU-UTs base of supporters through recruitment digital organizing and ongoing outreach.
  • Lead data entry and maintenance of distribution lists and databases for public engagement through ACLU-UTs digital tools and communications platforms.
  • Oversee the Campaigns team tabling inventory and preparation of ACLU-UT tabling kit.

Other Job Functions
  • In collaboration with the Director of Community Engagement develop annual work plans.
  • Conduct administrative duties such as budgeting and scheduling.
  • Perform other related duties and assist with additional events as assigned by the Director of Community Engagement.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated support of ACLU-UTs mission and values.
  • At least two (2) years of community advocacy and engagement experience (including paid volunteer or school-related activism) in community engagement field organizing volunteer management or base building for issue-based or political campaigns.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills; willingness to speak in front of groups about a wide range of civil liberties and civil rights issues on behalf of the organization; and familiarity with guiding discussion among diverse groups.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills and experience working with partners and/or community members to achieve common goals.
  • Ability to think proactively anticipate and analyze challenges respond strategically to stressful situations and take initiative to change course quickly when required.
  • Working knowledge of the legislative process at the state and local levels.
  • Extremely strong project and time management skills including developing and adhering to timelines and deadlines tracking progress on goals and managing and prioritizing multiple responsibilities.
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft tools project management tools (such as Asana) social media and other digital platforms such as Zoom and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.
  • Ability and flexibility to work in a fast-paced sometimes high-pressure work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Utahs political social and cultural landscapes
  • Experience with policy research
  • Familiarity with the ACLUs work and impact both statewide and nationally
  • Commitment to social change through building the capacity and power ofmarginalized people to support their communities and to participate directly inchanging public policies
  • Direct community engagement experience including text banking phonebanking and working with volunteers on outreach tactics
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with organizing and advocacy software and tools;experience with EveryAction and VAN/CAN is a plus
  • Experience giving media interviews
  • Conversational Spanish

The following physical demands and work environment conditions represent those required and encountered by an employee when performing essential job functions. Physical Demands:
  • Ability to work at a computer for multiple hours per day
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 40 pounds
Work Environment:
  • Hybrid work environment consisting of approximately a 40-hour work week with work from home permitted when work responsibility allows.
  • Periodically required to work irregular and extended hours including some evenings and weekends
  • Valid Drivers License and reliable transportation required to travel around Salt Lake and neighboring counties with mileage reimbursement. Must be able to independently transport a significant amount of tabling and event-related materials. Occasional ability to travel long distances across Utah with mileage reimbursement and/or a rental vehicle required.
SALARY & BENEFITS:

The Community Engagement Associate salary range is $55000-$65000 based on experience.Excellent benefits include: generous paid time off medical vision and dental insurance and a 401(k) plan with employer matching contribution that vests immediately.
