Job Summary

The Director of Leadership & Volunteerism serves as the divisional and institutional expert on student leadership development and training. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students this role is a dynamic campus leader responsible for the strategic vision development and assessment of comprehensive leadership programs and volunteer opportunities that advance student success. The director will empower students to become effective ethical and engaged leaders fostering a culture of leadership that extends from the co-curricular to the academic realm.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Program Development: Design implement and assess a holistic leadership development curriculum for OU students. This includes flagship events like the Leader Summit as well as monthly workshops trainings and resources tailored to enhance students skills and help them achieve organizational goals.

Organizational Support & Consultation: Provide expert guidance and consultation to (registered) student organizations departments faculty and staff on a wide range of leadership topics and development. Assess organizational and leadership development needs and gaps design targeted interventions and partner with University departments to create and promote high-impact leadership and volunteer opportunities.

Operational Oversight: Manage the day-to-day operations of all leadership and volunteer programs including scheduling logistics and resource allocation ensuring financial accountability and effective program delivery.

Data-Driven Assessment: Establish and maintain a robust assessment strategy. Collect and analyze data to evaluate program effectiveness measure student learning outcomes and inform strategic adjustments to meet departmental and institutional goals.

Campus & Community Collaboration: Forge and maintain strategic partnerships with campus departments student organizations academic leadership programs and external community partners to advance leadership and volunteer initiatives that align with the Division of Student Affairs and the Lead On Strategic Plan.

Advising & Mentorship: Advise/co-advise and mentor departmental student organizations (DSOs) Lead and Volunteer orgs (Lead Team The Big Event etc.) and areas of the Student Government Association (SGA) as well as mentor students in leadership roles and sanctioned trainings and development.

Management & Supervision

Staff Supervision: Recruit supervise train and mentor 1-2 full-time professional staff members fostering their professional growth and development. Based on available budget additional supervisory responsibilities may include graduate assistants and student employees.

Performance Management: Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback to direct reports as required by university human resources policies.

Required Education and Experience:Masters degree in Higher Education Student Affairs Human Relations or a closely related field AND:

  • Five years of experience in student affairs leadership education program development and volunteer management within a higher education setting.

Equivalency/Substitution:Experience or a combination of education & related experience can be considered in lieu of degree. A one-to-one ratio is used to determine the number of years of experience required in place of a degree.

Skills:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Proficient in curriculum design and skilled in using various online platforms including student organization management systems and creative software (e.g. Microsoft Office 365 Canva Engage GivePulse).
  • Ability to design develop and deliver engaging and impactful workshops training sessions and presentations on leadership and volunteerism topics for diverse student and campus partner audiences.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex situations and make data-informed decisions.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects prioritize deadlines and maintain meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to build rapport and collaborative relationships with students faculty staff and community partners.
  • A passion for student development and a demonstrated commitment to building inclusive healthy student communities.
  • The ability to thrive and lead in a dynamic fast-paced environment and embrace organizational change.
  • Effective leadership in chairing committees leading councils and representing the Division of Student Affairs across the campus and in the community.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum design public speaking and facilitating training for diverse audiences.

Advertised Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Standard office environment.
  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions and communicate effectively.

Department Preferences:

  • A minimum of five years of direct experience working with students staff and faculty in a student affairs capacity.
