Our Healthy Communities program team leads Ecojustices work to protect people and the environment from pollution and toxic chemicals tackle environmental racism and achieve healthy livable communities.


About The Role

The Program Director Healthy Communities plays a key leadership role in advancing Ecojustices mission. This position leads strategy and execution for the Healthy Communities program with a focus on litigation law reform and other program tools to tackle pollution toxic chemicals environmental racism and supporting livable communities. The Director collaborates across program areas embeds justice equity diversity inclusion and Reconciliation into all aspects of the work and builds strong relationships with communities partners and donors.


Strategic Objectives


  1. Develop and lead the execution of the Healthy Communities program strategy.

  2. Mentor the Healthy Communities Team to build expertise in the program area.

  3. Collaborate with senior leaders at Ecojustice to lead the organization.

Role Responsibilities
Lead Healthy Communities

  • Develop and implement program strategy objectives and plans
  • Advance systemic change in Canadian law and policy through leading program litigation and advocacy strategies
  • Guide file development take advantage of program opportunities ensuring alignment with organizational goals and JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) principles
  • Approve program projects and present files to the Board
  • Collaborate across departments to integrate Healthy Communities work
  • Build respectful partnerships with communities governments and organizations
  • Support donor engagement and fundraising efforts with the Philanthropy team


Leadership Responsibilities


Department & People Leadership

  • Recruit and manage direct reports including mentorship performance and growth planning
  • Participate in management support coaching mentorship and provide feedback for program team members
  • Model a respectful collaborative high-impact team culture aligned with Ecojustices values
  • Collaborate with People & Culture to enhance engagement and team effectiveness

Organizational Leadership

  • Contribute to strategic planning and organizational leadership alongside peers
  • Report on program outcomes to the Executive Director staff and Board
  • Help shape organizational policies and represent Ecojustice externally
  • Lead development of program practices structures and stakeholder engagement
  • Oversee budgeting resource allocation and financial planning for the program

Typically we find that people who succeed in this role bring:

  • Deep expertise in Canadian law and policy related to pollution toxic waste and pesticides.
  • Scientific knowledge of environmental contaminants (e.g. PFAS pesticides) and their health/ecological impacts.
  • Proven leadership in program or functional area management including strategic planning and execution.
  • Strong team leadership skills with experience mentoring recruiting and managing performance.
  • Exceptional communication abilities to translate complex legal and technical concepts for varied audiences.
  • Senior-level decision-making skills with an understanding organizational impact and risk management
  • Experience in law reform government relations and budget oversight.
