Job Summary
The Laboratory of Dr. Leonard Foster is currently seeking to hire a Project Manager Technical Applications at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on the Vancouver campus. The successful candidate will provide the technical expertise required for the research projects and will be responsible for managing proteomics projects for the UBC Proteomics Core Facility and associated research sites including planning and overall operation of multiple LC-MS/MS systems. The successful candidate will be also responsible for training and supervision of users and management of research projects.

Organizational Status
The incumbent will report to the chair of the facility and must work with faculty staff and students on daily basis.

Work Performed

Major responsibilities of the position include:

  • Developing implementing and managing projects such as single-cell proteomics glyco- and phospho-proteomics data-independent acquisition methods and more efficient sample preparation methods including designing project proposals protocols work plans and timelines.

  • Responsible for providing guidance establishing work priorities and setting timelines for all research projects and personnel to ensure efficient planning and execution.

  • Managing research activities including planning facilitating communicating and overseeing implementation.

  • Overall protocol development including adapting published protocols and developing new protocols for all aspects of the proteomics workflow including sample preparation mass spectrometry and data analysis.

  • Managing and ensuring smooth execution of laboratory logistics including supplies record-keeping and proper handling of irreplaceable samples in coordination with senior management.

  • Planning and managing financial resources for the projects including operating and research accounts subject to final approval by the PI and the Director of the core facility.

  • Exploring different funding options and developing funding and grant proposals in consultation with the PI and the Director of the core facility.

  • Leading and supervising research activities including data collection analysis interpretation and preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication.

  • Guiding and supervising literature searches and reviews and ensuring timely and accurate updates of website content and project information.

  • Authorizing and reviewing purchases and expenditures.

  • Providing technical expertise including method development troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.

  • Training and supervising staff and students and ensuring appropriate training for collaborators.

  • Initiating and managing training programs policies and guidelines.

  • Preparing reports statistics and graphic presentations for the funders or for journals/publications.

  • Performing other related duties.

Consequence of errors could result in damage to sensitive scientific equipment incorrect data and/or delays in projects which might affect the experiments or results of others in the group or lead to major delays in publishing or loss of grant funding.

Supervision Received
Works independently checking with facility director and PIs when necessary.

Supervision Given
Demonstrates how to operate highly technical equipment and procedures to students and staff. Supervises technical staff and students on the implementation of new methods.

Minimum Qualifications

University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • University degree in chemistry biochemistry or related field.

  • Five years of experience in a research environment including demonstrated training and supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experience with proteomics sample preparation mass spectrometry hard- and software as well as modern separation techniques (chromatography electrophoresis ion mobility) is essential.

  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation is essential.

  • Experience with the use and maintenance of common bioinformatics software platforms is required. Demonstrated ability to improve and implement methods in a modern laboratory.

  • Experience with proteomics experimental design and sample handling required

  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining nanoUPLC ESI Q-TOF and TIMS-TOF instrumentation required

  • Experience using and troubleshooting common bioinformatics software platforms (for protein identification quantitation) required

  • Teaching training presentation and technical writing experience required

  • Effective oral and written communication presentation conflict resolution problem-solving program planning facilitation management interpersonal organizational and analytical skills required

  • Ability to prioritize multi-task and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines

  • Ability to exercise initiative judgement tact and confidentiality; ability to problem solve; ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
