The Safety Director is a senior management position at Hi-Way Paving responsible for leading and managing the companys safety program across all projects and operations. This individual will oversee a team of Safety Managers and Coordinators while partnering with the Executive Leadership Team and field leadership to ensure compliance drive a strong safety culture and continuously improve systems and processes that keep people safe.

What Youll Do:
Safety Leadership & Culture
- Provide strategic direction for Hi-Ways safety program aligning with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Lead mentor and develop a team of Safety Managers and Coordinators to ensure consistent safety practices across all sites.
- Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team to strengthen the companys safety culture and drive accountability at every level.
- Track and communicate safety performance metrics; lead initiatives to reduce risk and improve outcomes.
Program Management & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA DOT FAA DOD and project-specific safety requirements.
- Review and approve project-specific safety plans and documentation including FAA Safety Plan Compliance Documents and other agency-required materials.
- Lead and coordinate company-wide safety audits job hazard analyses (JHAs/AHAs) and inspections.
- Oversee the full incident management lifecycle including investigations corrective actions and reporting.
- Maintain and present safety documentation and data reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop plans for increasing utilization and guiding adoption of the HCSS Safety (software) system.
Training & Development
- Develop and oversee an annual safety training program ensuring employees at all levels are properly trained and certified.
- Coordinate external training resources and certifications; manage vendor partnerships.
- Serve as an internal subject matter expert and resource for specialized safety topics (e.g. confined spaces fall protection airfield work).
- Keep Hi-Way up to date with regulatory changes emerging risks and industry best practices.
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with Project Managers Superintendents and field teams to embed safety into project planning and execution.
- Represent Hi-Way in safety-related discussions with clients owners regulators and industry organizations.
- Effectively communicate safety priorities and initiatives to all levels of the workforce.
What We Look For:
Education & Certifications
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety Environmental Health & Safety Construction Management or related field required. Equivalent construction experience will be considered.
- CHST or other safety certification required.
- Additional certifications such as CSP ASP OHST strongly preferred.
- OSHA 500 (Authorized Outreach Trainer) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 710 years of progressive safety management experience in heavy civil construction with strong preference for concrete paving projects.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience leading safety teams (safety managers/coordinators).
- Experience with large-scale infrastructure or airfield (FAA/DOD) projects is a plus.
Skills & Attributes
- Expert knowledge of OSHA DOT FAA and applicable federal/state/local safety regulations.
- Strong leadership and mentorship abilities; able to manage and develop safety teams.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills across field and office audiences.
- Analytical and organizational skills with the ability to use safety data to drive decisions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management technologies.
- Valid drivers license; ability to travel up to 25% (more if not based in Charlotte).
- Ability to gain clearance for restricted/high-security zones (Airport AOA Military Bases etc.).
- Physical capability to perform site inspections (climbing lifting 25 lbs. confined spaces etc.).
- Must be at least 18 years old to meet job-site safety and labor requirements.
