Project Title: Reading Together: The Role of Book Clubs as Cultural and Community Resources
Project Introduction:
Recent PIAAC and PISA results reflect a significant decline in literacy in Singaporean adults aged 35 and above. While there are efforts to encourage adults to read and maintain their literacy proficiency SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) also noted that literacy skills often decline after individuals leave school as their use at work and daily life may be less demanding. Beyond formal education book clubs (sometimes known as reading groups) can open spaces where members can develop intellectually and culturally through group discussions. As such understanding the contribution of book clubs to adult literacy and how these informal learning communities can extend and prevent the atrophy of our literacy skills is crucial.
