Job Description
Summary/objective
As a member of the Technical Support team the Senior Desktop Technician provides a high-quality customer service experience to the faculty staff and students at Great Plains Technology Center. This position serves as a primary point of contact for end-user technology support and plays a critical role in managing the lifecycle of technology assets across the organization. The Senior Desktop Technician installs diagnoses repairs maintains and upgrades computer systems and software to ensure optimal addition this role contributes to planning and procurement by evaluating technology needs matching appropriate specifications and coordinating with vendors for quotes and purchasing.
Essential functions
- Monitor work queues to verify completion of work orders.
- Provide task-level coordination and/or training to assigned contractors interns or temporary staff engaged in IT installations or technical projects.
- Plan deployment of new computers and devices per the refresh plan.
- Evaluate technology needs for instructional and administrative environments; research and recommend appropriate hardware and software solutions based on use requirements and specifications.
- Prepare and request vendor quotes for computers and related technology that meet required specifications.
- Manage technology inventory and asset tracking before during and after deployment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with PCs printers copiers operating systems and software applications
- Perform software and hardware installations and updates.
- Execute moves additions changes and deletions for assigned workstations and peripherals.
- Support and maintain equipment across multiple campus locations.
- Supervise contractors installing network cabling cameras and door locks.
- Provide after-hours and weekend on-call support as assigned.
- Perform regular upgrades to ensure systems remain secure and up to date.
- Troubleshoot system failures or bugs and implement solutions to restore functionality.
- Coordinate maintenance sessions to identify and correct inefficiencies.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs upgrades and configurations for future reference.
- Provide timely technical support and assist users in effectively utilizing computer systems.
- Collaborate with the Network Administrator to support the performance and integrity of the IT infrastructure.

Leadership & Collaboration: Supports teamwork within the IT department by sharing knowledge mentoring junior technicians and assisting in larger infrastructure or security projects. Coordinates effectively with administrative and instructional departments to align IT support with institutional goals.

Work Environment
The Senior Desktop Technician works primarily within office classroom and technical lab environments. Work involves frequent use of computers printers networking equipment and related peripherals. Occasional work in mechanical or wiring areas (server rooms ceilings or crawl spaces) may be required. Evening or weekend hours may occur for system upgrades emergency repairs or institutional events.
Physical Demands
This role requires the ability to lift and carry computer equipment (up to 30 pounds) bend crouch and kneel during installations and stand or walk for extended periods. The technician must have manual dexterity for handling small components visual acuity for reading system details and the ability to work safely with electrical and electronic equipment in tight or elevated spaces.
Travel required
Occasional travel between Great Plains Technology campuses. Travel may also include professional development activities and participation in district-wide initiatives.
Required education and experience
- High School Diploma or equivalency
- At least 5 years of experience as a PC Technician or equivalent technical support role
- Experience with PC deployment and imaging
Preferred education and experience
- Experience with wireless and other networking devices
- CompTIA A Security or equivalent certifications
- Experience with device management and asset tracking systems
- Working knowledge of server-based or cloud-managed environments
