Job Summary

General Summary


The Transit Maintenance Worker within the CAT Shop Maintenance Division performs routine semi-skilled general maintenance such as cleaning washing fueling detailing and moving of (heavy diesel-powered) transit buses (diesel-electric) hybrid powered buses minibuses/paratransit buses (cutaway buses) City vehicles and equipment. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Transit Maintenance Worker Supervisor.

Starting pay is at $23.89 an hour.This is a full-time non-exempt position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday paid vacation and sick leave health insurance options with employer contribution employer-paid life insurance Citys retirement options gym membership reimbursement tuition reimbursement and continuing education/training opportunities.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Washes bus and vehicle exteriors using an automated wash facility and steam cleaners.
  • Cleans/washes equipment as needed.
  • Cleans bus and vehicle interiors.
  • Fuels and checks fluid levels of buses/vehicles.
  • Cleans bus shelters using appropriate cleaning materials and performs minor repairs as needed.
  • Delivers replacement vehicles to operators.
  • Maintains cleanliness and order of garage shop space and grounds.
  • Operates various types of vehicles equipment and machinery relevant to the tasks assigned.
  • Picks up and delivers parts supplies and other items.
  • Follows safety instructions and attends appropriate safety training including body fluid spill clean-up procedures.
  • Organizes and completes related sets of responsibilities sometimes requiring multiple steps for completion.
  • May assist Transit maintenance personnel with routine tasks as needed.
  • May install bus stop amenities such as signs sign poles benches and shelters as needed.
  • May perform snow or debris removal or other related tasks as necessary.
  • Performs all requirements and has knowledge of Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration requirements for transit bus operation.
  • Supports departmental goal to provide dependable efficient and safe transportation service.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment tools and other resources including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Subject to being called back to work in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public. Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.

  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 10th grade.
  • Some work experience that demonstrates safe and effective handling of a variety of cleaning products and chemicals.
Preferred:
  • Some experience in the general maintenance and operation of automotive equipment.
  • Some experience with cleaning maintenance and light repair of vehicles and equipment.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check pre-employment drug screen (Virginia Department of Transportation) pre-employment physical and a pre-employment DMV driving record review.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and obtain Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 90 days of start date and maintain acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
  • Subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
  • Ability to work weeknights weekends holidays and/or weather-related emergency on-call time periods.

  • General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streets.
  • General knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and the use of common hand tools.

  • Thorough knowledge of the potential risks of exposure to body fluids and appropriate knowledge (and use of) personal protective equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the handling of specialized cleaning chemicals.

  • Basic: Ability to write sample letters paragraphs and sentences containing subject verb and object and/or series of numbers names and addresses. Understands and applies state departmental and City processes and procedures as required.

  • Basic: Ability to write simple letters paragraphs and sentences containing subject verb and object and/or a series of numbers names and addresses (which may be composed into a simple report).
Math
  • Basic: Ability to perform the four arithmetic operations of additions subtraction multiplication and division.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy Work: Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work requires walking climbing (ascending/descending steps) lifting balancing bending stooping crawling crouching reaching pushing/pulling twisting and grasping.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Machines Tools Equipment Software and Hardware:
  • Work typically requires use of specialized equipment such as automated wash facility and any associated cleaning tools/equipment as well as standard office equipment and telephone and related industry-specific software.
Work Environment:
  • Work is typically performed outdoors which may involve exposure to extreme temperatures chemicals/hazardous waste gases/gas leaks and blood-borne pathogens.
  • The work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions loud noise vibration and atmospheric conditions and may be exposed to roadway safety hazards.
