LSO ENG 3 Radio Systems Engineer – Closing date extended

The Team
The Avalanche Weather Radio and Telecommunications team is a small dedicated group responsible for maintaining the Ministrys critical radio communications infrastructure and associated systems. This tight-knit team of technical professionals supports province-wide operations to ensure the safety and reliability of communication networks essential to highway maintenance and public safety.

The Role
As a Radio Systems Engineer you will be responsible for leading the design and engineering of the Ministry of Transportation and Transits (MOTT) proprietary radio system and supervising the development and standards that govern the design manufacture and installation of components related to MOTTs radio systems. The position provides expert advice and services to the Province IMB regions districts other public agencies and road and bridge maintenance contractors regarding radio system operations and infrastructure. This position must say informed and current about the most recent developments in this professional field to ensure effective and efficient service delivery. The position requires the individual to be technically proficient self-learning and have excellent communication skills.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering with four years of varied communication and transportation related experience.
• Must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a fully licensed Professional Engineer (.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
• Experience working with the following (An equivalent combination of experience may be considered):
  • Communications networks including spread spectrum;
  • Arduino module design and programming;
  • AutoCAD;
  • Radio control systems and instrumentation;
  • RoIP networks;
  • VHF and UHF radio systems; and
  • Telephone interconnect systems.

Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following: (applicants that screen in on the above essential criteria may be further screened on any of the following preferences)

• Specializations in RF and/or telecommunications engineering
• Amateur Radio Operators Certificate;
• Radio modulation schemes;
• Information technology; and
• Computer networking.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (those that screen in may be assessed on their knowledge skills abilities and competencies)

• Knowledge of antenna patterns and propagation models.
• Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
• Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
• Working knowledge of grounding and lightning arresting techniques.
• Excellent knowledge of electronics and maintenance requirements.
• Excellent knowledge of microprocessor hardware operating systems and network applications.
• Working knowledge of C/C Language for Arduino programming.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues contractors Ministry officials the public and other agencies.
• Moderate coordination and dexterity required for driving to monitor and inspect field operations perform complex equipment repairs adjustments and maintenance on site.
• Skills and abilities in meeting working with and negotiation with various stakeholders and consultants.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office products for word processing spreadsheets presentations and other electronic applications.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills.
• Ability to assess respond and re-prioritize tasks to support emergent and changing scenarios.

Provisos:

• Valid Class 5 Motor Vehicle License.
• Ability and willingness to travel throughout the province in order to perform field work and assessments on remote mountaintop repeater sites. This field work may occur in adverse environmental conditions and a variety of transportation modes including helicopters snowmobiles and hiking into remote sites may be required.

MUST BE WILLING AND ABLE TO:

• Travel year round to satisfy site construction and maintenance.
• Travel and work for extended periods on short notice in urgent situations.
• Work on mountaintops in winter in locations prone to adverse weather and without shelter.
• Train and attain certification in Tower Climbing Crane Safe Survival TDG WHIMIS and other requirements to stay relevant in the position.
