American Indian Education Cultural Liaison

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision the American Indian Education Cultural Liaison is responsible for promoting intercultural understanding and awareness among students families and staff. This position supports the development implementation and evaluation of culturally responsive programs activities and services across the district. Serving as a vital link between American Indian students families schools and communities the Cultural Liaison affirms cultural identity strengthens connections to heritage and fosters the holistic success of American Indian students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as a cultural bridge between American Indian students families communities and district staff to support mutual understanding and collaboration.
• Partner with district leadership and the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) to ensure programs reflect American Indian perspectives.
• Develop and maintain culturally responsive family outreach systems that strengthen engagement honor cultural heritage and support student success.
• Coordinate and support cultural events ceremonies and educational opportunities that affirm American Indian identity and promote intercultural awareness among students and staff.
• Provide mentorship and direct support to American Indian students fostering positive self-identity leadership development academic success and postsecondary readiness.
• Offer consultation and professional learning for staff on culturally relevant practices curriculum integration and effective strategies for supporting American Indian students.
• Collaborate with tribal leaders elders and community partners to build and sustain strong school-community relationships.
• Partner with the Community Education Director and multicultural liaisons in advancing district goals through program development implementation and culturally responsive initiatives.
• Support the collection analysis and reporting of data to ensure MDE compliance and guide continuous program improvement; provide regular updates on activities outcomes and needs.
• Actively supports the mission of Community Education and the school district by serving on committees attending events and participating in collaborative initiatives.
• Performs additional duties as assigned in support of departmental and district-wide goals.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Deep knowledge and/or lived experience of American Indian history cultures traditions and contemporary issues impacting students families and communities.
• Understanding the Minnesota Department of Educations American Indian Education program goals requirements and reporting processes.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and maintain respectful effective relationships with students families tribal elders community members and district staff.
• Cultural competence and the ability to communicate effectively across cultural and linguistic differences including facilitating activities that promote cultural identity and intercultural understanding.
• Ability to collaborate with educators and administrators to integrate culturally relevant perspectives into curriculum instruction and student support programs.
• Proficiency in using technology for communication data collection program coordination and reporting.
• Outreach advertising and engaging in public relations activities to promote the programs and services of family engagement and community education programs.
• Concepts principles and philosophy of lifelong learning public education and the relationship of community education to K-12 programming.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Requires a High School Diploma or Equivalent GED.
• Requires at least three (3) years of experience working with American Indian education and/or field experience with American Indian communities.
• Strong verbal written and electronic communication skills.
• Preferred: Bachelors Degree in education social studies or related field and Two (2) years of classroom experience
