About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has a unique opportunity for an Archaeologist to work as part of the North Coast Branch team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment flora fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

This role is a technical position providing Aboriginal cultural heritage and archaeological input into environmental impact assessments Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permits (AHIP) conservation works and monitoring programs for NPWS. As an Archaeologist you will be responsible for providing technical cultural heritage interpretation research and advice in response to NPWS North Coast Branch needs project management field work and client liaison. The role collaborates with NPWS Aboriginal Partnerships and Heritage Unit external and internal stakeholders.

About You

To be successful in the role you will have a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with Aboriginal peoples. You are highly organised and motivated and able to work under limited supervision to manage competing priorities and achieve results.

You are able to solve complex problems work towards achieving stakeholder agreement and provide culturally appropriate recommendations whilst balancing Aboriginal culture customary practices and environmental legal requirements into decision making.

Knowledge and experience

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in archaeological survey assessment and contemporary management of Aboriginal cultural heritage as it relates to state legislation and NSW Aboriginal heritage regulation (minimum two years full time experience).
• Experience in the analysis of complex concepts and challenges in relation to Aboriginal cultural heritage issues and in applying creative and practical solutions.
• Experience in development and delivery of projects including the development of project plans monitoring of project timelines budgets and reporting requirements and contract administration.
• Experience with using ArcGIS GPS tablets laptop digital cameras and Microsoft Office suite of products.

Essential requirements

• Bachelor degree with honours (or equivalent) in archaeological or cultural heritage and minimum two years full time experience in Australian Aboriginal archaeology.
• Ability to work outdoors in field locations is essential including a willingness to travel to locations throughout the North Coast Branch for periods of time.
• Current Drivers Licence and ability to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles.
