Job Summary

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University is seeking a postdoctoral research scholar to join Dr. Karen Watanabes research team. Dr. Watanabes research focuses on the development of mathematical and computational models of biological systems. This position is supported by an NIH Virtual Consortium for Translational/Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (ViCTER) grant In Vitro to In Vivo Extrapolation of Toxicant Effects on Ovarian Function and will focus on phthalates and developing models that extrapolate in vitro assay results to predict in vivo effects on ovarian function in mice and monkeys.

The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in toxicology molecular/cellular biology reproductive endocrinology or bioengineering and have a strong interest in the development of mathematical/computational models for use in chemical risk assessment. Experience with the kinetics and effects of phthalates toxicologically relevant transcription factor receptors e.g. peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) or the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in mice or monkeys is desired. We are looking for an individual who works well in an interdisciplinary team across multiple institutions and who understands the level of detail needed to develop predictive models for in vitro to in vivo extrapolation and chemical risk assessment. Our teams long-term goal is to develop a New Approach Methodology for identifying chemicals that may cause female reproductive toxicity.

Salary Range: $61008 to $66000 commensurate with experience. This postdoctoral scholar appointment may be supported through 1/31/27 depending on performance and the availability of funding.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Perform literature reviews and summarize relevant topics for the research team
  • Organize and summarize experimental data being collected by our collaborators
  • Develop biologically based mathematical models to represent the effects of dibutyl phthalate in the body
  • Communicate/disseminate research results at team meetings and scientific conferences as appropriate
  • Assist with writing reports and papers for publication
  • Mentor students working on this project


Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in toxicology molecular/cellular biology reproductive endocrinology bioengineering or related field at the time of hire.
  • The candidate must be within five years from receipt of the doctoral degree

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with toxicologically relevant transcription factor receptors such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors estrogen receptors
  • Experience with the development of mathematical/computational models for use in chemical risk assessment
  • Familiarity with the dynamics and regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis
  • Familiarity with the kinetics and dynamics of phthalates
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty staff students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
