DescriptionIn accordance with the Vision Purpose and Values and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Working as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team the Surgical Care Nurse functions as an experienced self-directed surgical care nurse by assessing planning providing and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Training And Experience
Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant; and
Post-basic education in surgical/ambulatory care nursing on a unit specific basis; or
An equivalent combination of education and training.
Up to two (2) years recent related experience on a unit specific basis.
Basic Life Support Level C
Skills And Abilities
- Apply nursing process as required and described in BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards of Nursing Practice
- Demonstrate sound organizational problem solving and teaching skills
- Demonstrate sound judgement observation and patient assessment skills
- Demonstrate tact and empathy
- Prioritize and organize patient demands made and care needs
- Operate related equipment
- Remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful and emergency situations
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team
- Foster good public relations
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Physically able to perform the duties of the position
- Work independently with limited supervision
