CBC Ottawa is looking for a creative innovative collaborative and independent-thinking journalist/producer for a unique role as associate producer for the content diversification and creator network unit. This would be a full-time position for 8 months with the possibility to extend.
This position is different from any other in Ottawas newsroom. Reporting to the unit producer you will work to put together compelling original digital content that pushes the boundaries of our storytelling focusing on new diverse perspectives and experiences told in innovative ways with the goal to draw in new audiences. While the majority of your time will be spent working with and developing video storytelling projects with emerging creators you will also be asked to work on a range of storytelling projects from first person written pieces to photography to graphic storytelling to everything in between and your job will also include bringing those stories to the audience on multiple emerging platforms to reach the audience where they are. From pitch to publication youll strive to find homes for these diverse perspectives and stories at CBC Ottawa and across CBC while fostering a community of creators and continuing to build this network.
Your strengths are both in imaginative storytelling and developing relationships with potential freelance creators sources and audience members to develop projects that are firmly rooted in this community but that are also surprising to our audience. You are able to encourage and build momentum with emerging storytellers bringing in their unique perspectives while communicating the need to balance this with journalistically rigorous storytelling.
Strong journalism storytelling and relationship-building skills are needed as well as an ability to write and edit. Video skills are an asset but an interest in learning new ways of video storytelling is more important alongside a genuine interest in exploring digital storytelling tools. An interest in mentoring and interacting with those outside the CBC is key as well as a strong ability to communicate and share your work internally. An independent-thinker who can juggle multiple projects on multiple timelines is essential. Knowledge of contracting and rights issues is an asset.
As the primary associate producer for this unit you will pitch original ideas that connect with the community seek diverse perspectives and new creators as well as innovative treatments that help stories resonate with new audiences. You will assist in developing digital content including researching writing editing organizing shoots and reviewing freelancer work as needed. You will balance your work managing creators projects with content diversification or first person stories on different deadlines. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or show policies practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.
Key Tasks include:
Seek out connect and build relationships with emerging independent creators and talent from diverse and digital communities mentor and guide them from pitch to publication and create a sense of belonging for them within the CBC.
Throughout the process provide creative feedback and notes while communicating CBCs journalistic principles and business and rights practices ensuring that bar is met before publication.
Assist in developing content including idea generating chasing of voices writing researching editing preparing questioning setting up shoots fact-checking developing the writing or ideas of others
Assist in packaging Creator Network stories for multiple platforms as they evolve including writing web articles radio and tv scripts Youtube titles and thumbnails and producing social media content as well as managing internal communications around publication.
Assist with assessing First Person story ideas and pitches helping to shape mentor edit fact-check and package these stories as well as manage publication rollout
Contribute ideas for content and suggestions for treatment of original compelling diverse and people-focussed content diversification stories in the Ottawa region
Potential to gather audio-visual material including interviews video and photographs to enhance digital print and social media platforms as required.
Potential to assist with events or other engagement-focussed happenings that enhance the creator community and CBCs role in it or that generally build on gaps in our coverage
Develop and maintain contacts in a range of diverse communities around the region
Manage multiple projects on different timelines
Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple departments and outside CBC
act as a CBC ambassador in Ottawas production and creative communities.
Adhere to the Journalistic Standards and Practices of the CBC some familiarity with media agreements Business & Rights budgets.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
University degree or equivalent
Five years practical and relevant experience including some experience with collaborating in creative partnerships and content production
An understanding of local journalism and the tools needed to produce it
A deep understanding of how to work with creatives from all walks of life effectively communicating journalism business and rights and other storytelling needs while collaborating on unique diverse surprising and creative finished products
A strong sense of journalistic storytelling with an awareness of contemporary political economic cultural and social issues of importance to this community paired with a good understanding of the needs of a diverse Ottawa audience
A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective opinion and experience and the ability to tell stories from those perspectives whatever that looks like.
Must have strong creative judgement initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the quality of work throughout the complete production cycle as well as publication as well as the ability to provide imaginative and effective solutions and suggestions
Strong critical thinking skills (familiarity with CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices is essential).
Excellent writing editing video producing and other digital storytelling skills
Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and projects and prioritize and plan and to keep enthusiasm and momentum going on projects that can take months and evolve over time.
Ability to generate pitch and pursue strong creative and original people-focussed story ideas and treatments with the goal of reaching new audience
Ability to seek out new voices and freelancers and develop relationships with audience members and potential collaborators
Knowledge of the digital space and trends as well as social media
A demonstrated connection to diverse communities within the Ottawa area as well as a commitment to producing journalism for audiences that are often underserved and/or underrepresented.
Excellent communication interpersonal and outreach skills along with the ability to work under tight deadlines with multiple priorities interacting with different teams across the organization.
Ability to give effective feedback and coach emerging content.
