Metals Department Manager
Reports to: Director of Operations
The hourly rate begins at $39.00 per hour and may be higher commensurate with experience and skill level.
JOB DESCRIPTION
You are responsible for the Metals Department in a 100000 square foot shop fabricating world-class exhibits environments sets and interiors. You have a broad and refined skill set your attention to detail is impeccable and your work turns heads. Ravenswood Studio has a decades long reputation for completing the finest projects for museums theaters operas and commercial interests. It is difficult to overstate your role in the teams continued success. Our clients are consistently thrilled when their designs come to life.
Safety and efficiency are the key to our success. You manage your department and keep it humming. This includes providing staff training on our equipment helping others keep their skills honed and refining our processes. Coordinating staffing and balancing project requirements with Project Managers and Project Leads is second nature. Your leadership style encourages collaboration unites creative personalities motivates team member growth and supports the team as a whole.
You manage the Metals Departments resources and serve as a professional resource for all metalwork in Ravenswood projects. Utilizing the skill sets of the department staff you ensure that Ravenswood maintains appropriate subject matter experts within the department for all metal preparation cutting welding machining bending finishing and finish preparation procedures required by the scope of our projects. You manage the equipment materials and processes related to all department work. Motivated by an enthusiasm and natural curiosity for fabrication you stay informed of new product developments and best practices.
You serve as a consultant in the engineering and build process providing research alternative methods general time and cost estimates training and troubleshooting. You maintain relationships with current and prospective vendors and maintain active membership in relevant industry groups.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
PROJECT EXECUTION:
- Our industry presents us with a variety of challenges to tackle daily. Usually we fabricate based on formal drawing sets full of detail. When information is scarce or we are gathering information through prototyping your ability to build from an idea or develop solutions in the shop with the Project Team is critical.
- Schedule projects for routing through the Metals Department; working with the Director of Operations (DO) to keep things moving. Set goals for task completion and hold the department staff accountable.
- We often need help across departments. Everyone in the shop lends a hand with material handling cleaning and maintenance. Clients frequently comment Wow! You have a really clean shop.
- Work closely with the other Department Managers DO and Project Managers (PM) to maximize efficiency across the shop.
- Steward projects through the department inspecting work at critical junctures to ensure we meet our standards.
PROJECT CONSULTATION:
- Work with PMs Estimators Detailers and Designers to determine the needs and best solutions for projects.
- Research techniques materials and appropriate safety procedures and PPE as necessary to meet project specifications.
MANAGEMENT:
- The Metals Department staff are highly talented creative problem solvers. You provide training on the use of the shops tooling fabrication processes project planning project leadership and process improvement. This training both addresses the individual goals of the team members and aides the development of Ravenswoods capabilities.
- Keeping the department moving together is another important aspect of your job. Ensure that everyone has the most current information regarding process company policy important updates and the like. When disagreements or complaints arise mediate as possible. Escalate any unaddressed concerns to the DO.
- Coordinate schedules and department layout to ensure efficient fabrication and completion of other Metals Department tasks.
- Participate in employee performance reviews. This formal process is really an extension of your daily leadership and communication.
- Support team members growth and development.
EQUIPMENT MATERIALS AND PROCESS:
- The Metals Department today stands as the product of thousands of small decisions that have created a nimble fabrication space well suited to our work. Keeping the space functional clean and tailored to our needs requires consistent attention. You set and maintain general cleaning and maintenance procedures and schedules for all department equipment.
- Focusing on continuous incremental improvement keep a running list of available shop projects.
- Though our work is unique project to project some processes require highly repeatable results. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for common processes within the department and for department hand-offs.
- Work with the DO to maintain and update any Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for current and new products.
- Ensure maintenance of product inventory and request orders for needed materials.
- Perform safety and process audits to identify areas for improvement and/or retraining.
- Actively identify new areas for learning and exploring.
COMMUNICATION:
- We have a culture of knowledge and skill sharing. You are a driving force helping the department develop skills providing cross training to other department staff and contacting outside resources.
- Provide real-time feedback to your team focusing on their long-term development and personal goals.
- When overtime is required coordinate with the Project Manager and Project Lead to provide advance notification to department personnel. The Director of Operations authorizes OT on a project-by-project basis availability of OT is based upon the needs of the company and its projects.
- Assertively maintain safe practices.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely.
- Safely use and operate respiratory PPE.
- Wear protective eyewear and footwear at all times.
- Wear ear protection as required by task.
- Stand for prolonged periods.
- Provide personal hand tools cordless power tools layout tools and appropriate tool storage.
- Participate in local and out of town installations.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Relevant degree/diploma professional certification or equivalent work experience/demonstrated skills.
- Minimum of 10 years experience in a related field.
- Broad knowledge of modern fabrication methods and technologies.
- Ability to communicate proficiently and proactively with all personnel.
- Ability to direct multiple projects concurrently.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- A critical eye for detail and aesthetics. Uncompromising attention to detail. Willingness to have work redone to achieve the desired result.
