Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) with a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree serves as an advanced practitioner and leader in promoting the health and well-being of students and staff within Volusia County Schools the 57th largest school district in the United States serving over 61000 students across 45 elementary schools 12 middle schools and 9 high schools. The RN provides expert nursing care oversees health services in assigned schools and drives health policy and program development in alignment with Florida Department of Health guidelines and district policies. This contract position requires a highly skilled compassionate professional with advanced clinical expertise leadership and program development skills to foster a safe and healthy learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Health Assessments and Care: Conduct comprehensive health assessments administer complex medications and treatments and provide advanced nursing interventions for acute and chronic conditions within the RN scope of practice and school protocols.
Student Health Management: Develop implement and evaluate individualized and population-based health care plans for students with complex medical needs (e.g. asthma diabetes epilepsy anaphylaxis) ensuring optimal health outcomes and academic success.
Emergency Response: Lead rapid response to medical emergencies including seizures anaphylaxis or trauma and coordinate with emergency medical services when necessary; develop school-wide emergency preparedness protocols.
Health Education and Program Development: Design implement and evaluate evidence-based health education programs for students staff and families on topics such as disease prevention mental health and wellness; lead immunization clinics health fairs and wellness initiatives.
Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g. FAC 64B9-9.001 for RN practice FAC 6A-6.0253 for school health programs); maintain accurate confidential health records including incident reports immunization records and care plans; contribute to district health policy development.
Collaboration and Leadership: Collaborate with teachers counselors administrators and parents to address student health needs; provide expert health-related input in Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan meetings; mentor and supervise Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and health aides.
Training and Staff Development: Develop and deliver advanced training for school staff on health-related procedures (e.g. epinephrine administration glucose monitoring seizure management); promote health literacy and wellness across the school community.
Clinic and Inventory Management: Oversee school clinic operations ensuring supplies equipment and facilities are well-maintained and sanitary; coordinate with the district health office for inventory and resource allocation.
Professional Development and Research: Participate in mandatory district trainings in-service sessions and continuing education to maintain licensure; stay current on pediatric and school health research and best practices; contribute to health-related research or quality improvement initiatives within the district.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Licensure: Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Nursing or a related field (e.g. Public Health Nursing Education) from an accredited program; current active Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license (or eligibility for licensure) issued by the Florida Board of Nursing. Current CPR/First Aid certification required.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience with at least one (1) year in pediatrics school health or community health settings. Candidates with less experience may be considered with relevant graduate-level clinical rotations or internships.
Knowledge and Skills:
oExpert knowledge of nursing principles pediatric growth and development and school health practices.
oAdvanced leadership communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams.
oProficiency in electronic health records (e.g. district software systems) and Microsoft Office; familiarity with data analysis for health program evaluation.
oPhysical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. stand for extended periods and respond quickly in emergencies.
Other Requirements: High school diploma or GED; successful completion of background screening (Level 2 including fingerprints via FDLE/FBI) as mandated by Florida Statute 1012.32; negative drug screen and TB test.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a school or educational setting.
Certification in areas such as pediatric nursing school nursing (e.g. National Certified School Nurse) or chronic disease management (e.g. Certified Diabetes Educator).
Experience in health program development research or policy advocacy.
Advanced training in public health or nursing education.
