Job Summary

Primary Purpose:

Installs troubleshoots and maintains telecommunications data network and low voltage equipment and cabling including CAT 3/5/6 Fiber Optics Analog and VoIP telephones Card Access IP security cameras and building intercom systems.

Education / Certification:

  1. High School Diploma or GED supplemented by specialized training.
  2. Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification required. Includes but is not limited to fiber testing splicing polishing installation troubleshooting and maintenance.
  3. Valid Texas Drivers License with a driving record that meets the requirements as set forth by the District.

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  1. Fiber splicing termination (connectors) testing installation
  2. Telecommunications systems and practices
  3. Basic diagnostic skills
  4. Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets
  5. Customer Service Experience
  6. Ability to read project plans for new or remodeled areas related to position and recommend application practices is required.
  7. Possess good communication skills to discuss and define issues of mechanical and electrical issues with appropriate supervisory personnel and/or school administrators.
  8. Ability to work closely with other trades for layout of new or replacement of existing equipment.

Experience / Other Requirements:

  1. On-the-job experience in technical services related to telecommunications and network technology.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Installs diagnoses troubleshoots and maintains telecommunications and network hardware (routers patch panels IP telephones analog telephones fax machines 66-blocks 110-blocks PRIs) as directed by the Telecommunication Coordinator and Network Engineer.
  2. Installs terminates diagnoses and troubleshoots basic hardware problems with LAN/WAN cabling including fiber optic cabling and CAT 3/5/6.
  3. Maintains and resolves campus telecommunications and network work orders and follows up to ensure resolution with campus staff.
  4. Maintains inventories of equipment and supplies to sufficiently accomplish standard jobs.
  5. Installs and maintains network components including access points cameras routers and switches.
  6. Installs and maintains district security camera infrastructure including training and reporting.
  7. Works with district electrical shop to determine cable layouts and best procedures for low-voltage cable installations.
  8. Create / document as-built blueprint documentation of installed low voltage cabling.
  9. Manages workload in accordance with the department and users priorities.
  10. Responsible for properly maintaining district records adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
  11. Routinely works on and maintains Access Control system
  12. Plans and accomplishes work from initial layout to final assembly which involves interpreting and applying building plans specifications blueprints sketches and manufacturers instructions.
  13. Determines the methods techniques materials devices and sequences best suited to the work.
  14. Responsible for independently assessing the work situation on site determining the best method of accomplishment and taking the necessary corrective action while following accepted safety practices.
  15. Operates installs hardware troubleshoots and maintains keyless access control systems including proximity readers and proximity decoders.
  16. Performs installation of access control systems
  17. Operates from and maintains a neatly stocked service vehicle.
  18. Follows District safety guidelines.
  19. Diagnoses troubleshoots cleans and maintains the district surveillance camera system as directed by the Network Engineer.
  20. Coordinates installation and cabling of new surveillance cameras with the electrical shop as needed.
  21. Diagnoses troubleshoots and trains district personnel on the use and programming of intercom systems including the programming of bell schedules and electrical repair of building intercom systems.
  22. Coordinates outside vendor repair for low voltage systems (including intercom data network surveillance cameras and access control systems.)
  23. Stays up to date on all advancements in the assigned fields.
  24. Other duties as may be assigned.

  5. Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and high precarious places.
  6. Tasks are performed inside and outside in extreme inclement weather with occasional exposure to cold heat and dampness.
  7. May be required to work in a confined space.
  8. Frequent exposure to high noise levels.
  9. The employee is required to wear protective equipment when operating machinery to include eye wear and/or gloves.
  10. Moderate degree of communication (verbal or written) understanding verbal instructions and emotional control.
  11. May be required to work outside of normal duty hours and/or weekends or holidays in order to handle emergencies if they arise.
  12. The employee is required to frequently drive District vehicles in the performance of assigned tasks. The individual must pass a pre-employment physical examination to include alcohol and drug testing. The employee may be required to submit to drug and alcohol screening at any time throughout employment without prior notification.
