Job Title: Layout Inspector
Shift: 7:00am-3:30pm. Flexible after completion of training.
Pay Range: $20.00-$33.00 (Hourly Non-Exempt)
PURPOSE:
The Layout Inspector ensures that complex and critical castings patterns and components meet customer and regulatory requirements through precise dimensional and visual inspections. Working under general supervision this role performs advanced inspection techniques using surface plate setups CMM equipment and calibrated tools to verify quality and compliance. The Layout Inspector is a key contributor to maintaining PCCs reputation for delivering precision-engineered products to aerospace and industrial customers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Inspection & Setup
- Set up and perform dimensional and visual inspections on complex castings patterns and tooling to verify compliance with customer specifications and technique cards.
- Perform surface plate inspections manual gauging and advanced CMM operations including programming setup and part inspection.
- Interpret engineering drawings blueprints and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) requirements to ensure accurate measurements.
- Apply mathematical and geometric principles (including trigonometry and solid geometry) to solve inspection challenges.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete inspection reports logs calibration records and other required documentation with a high level of accuracy.
- Record discrepancies report out-of-tolerance conditions to supervisors and prepare corrective action requests as required.
- Maintain and update calibration dates in computer systems and on equipment tags.
Engineering & Customer Support
- Collaborate with engineering to troubleshoot dimensional issues recommend corrective actions and support tooling or fixture development.
- Assist with special projects such as reverse engineering print interpretation and inspection method selection.
- Serve as a technical resource for QC in-process inspections and provide guidance on resolving inspection problems.
- Maintain communication with customers tooling vendors and source inspectors; support audits and resolve layout interpretation issues.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety
- Operate calibrate and maintain CMMs comparators profilometers and a variety of precision inspection tools.
- Ensure inspection equipment fixtures and measuring devices are maintained in proper working order.
- Safely handle castings dies and tools using lifting devices (forklifts cranes lift tables) as needed.
- Follow all plant safety policies; identify and report safety concerns to prevent incidents.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand walk bend stoop and reach regularly throughout the work shift.
- Capable of lifting carrying and moving parts castings and equipment up to 35 pounds independently.
- Good handeye coordination and depth perception required for safe handling of precision tools and components.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to dust noise and moving equipment.
- Must be able to safely operate forklifts cranes and other lifting devices when handling heavy tools dies or fixtures.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED; additional technical coursework in inspection machining or engineering disciplines.
- 3 years of experience in layout inspection surface plate/mechanical inspection tool and die making or a closely related field.
- Background in reading and interpreting engineering drawings blueprints specifications and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Strong applied math skills including decimals fractions conversions solid geometry trigonometry and algebraic functions.
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as micrometers calipers dial indicators profilometers comparators and CMMs.
- Experience with CMM setup programming and inspection.
- Familiarity with non-destructive testing principles sampling methods and specialized inspection techniques.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to document inspection results and collaborate across teams.
- Willingness to complete specialized training in inspection techniques as required.
