With over 130 years of experience navigating in some of the worlds most complex and difficult waters Seaspan Marine is the largest and most diverse tug & barge company on Canadas West Coast providing more than 2500 ship assist & escort services annually while our fleet of over 100 specialty and general-purpose barges provide critical transportation for many of BCs largest industries and major marine construction projects.

The Data Engineering Intern will collaborate with the Supervisor Data & Integrations on projects that will expand Seaspan Marine Groups data operations through its data platform. This role will actively participate in developing testing and documenting an ETL project and its associated components. The Data Engineering Intern demonstrates exceptional professionalism initiative and a proactive approach to challenges. They bring strong creative and analytical problem-solving skills deliver high-quality work within established deadlines contribute positively to project success and embrace opportunities for continuous learning and growth.

Note: Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver BC.

What youll do

ETL and Data Integration

  • Identify relevant data sources that fulfill project goals

  • Develop and implement end-to-end ETL processes for data procurement and integration aligned with the architectural design and tools available within the Seaspan Marine Group technology landscape

  • Actively participate in implementing efficient data engineering workflows

Data Modeling and Quality

  • Support best practices in data modeling methodologies for the design and implementation of effective datasets

  • Support the establishment and enforcement of data quality standards and practices to ensure accuracy and reliability throughout the data life cycle

  • Develop data quality monitoring alerting and profiling processes

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and maintain data quality metrics and KPIs

Documentation and Communication

  • Write and maintain documentation of requirements data infrastructure data source catalogs data models ETL runbooks and data quality standards

  • Work closely with the Supervisor Data & Integrations to ensure alignment between developed solutions and established working practices

Predictive Data Analysis

  • Research methodologies and tools within Seaspan Marine Groups technology stack document and recommend solutions to deliver business objectives

  • Create predictive models to detect trends in ingested data highlighting potential business risks and opportunities

What youll bring

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Data Science Big Data Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence or a related area of study

  • Coursework or project experience in databases data structures or software development

  • Familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g. Python or SQL)

  • Strong analytical thinking problem-solving and curiosity to learn

  • Self-driven collaborative and organized

  • Interest in cloud platforms (e.g. Azure AWS or GCP)

  • Interest in quantitative methods and algorithms in their application in machine learning

  • Exposure to IDEs such as Visual Studio or VS Code for development and version control practices

  • Exposure to Agile Project Management concepts

Seaspans Internships are 4 or 8 months in duration. We require a full-time commitment MondayFriday 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.

Start Date of Internship: Monday January 12th 2026

End Date of Internship: Friday August 28th 2026 (8-Months)
