DescriptionThe Lippmann Lab in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Vanderbilt University seeks candidates to fill a senior research assistant position. The labs mission is to model understand and treat neurodegeneration using multidisciplinary approaches spanning engineering neuroscience and regenerative medicine. Please refer to to learn more about our research team members and news updates.
The research assistant will develop and support workflows related to human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) differentiation into neurons and other cellular products and to develop a screening assay that quantifies differences in epileptic-related phenotypes or outputs in response to treatment with FDA-approved compounds. The research assistant will work as part of a larger team consisting of investigators from VU and VUMC that focus on using iPSCs to rapidly identify potential therapeutics for patients with drug refractory epilepsy.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Cell culture
- Maintain iPSC lines
- Engineer iPSC lines for transcription factor-based differentiation to neurons
- Develop assays to quantify epileptic signatures in neurons and their amelioration by FDA-approved drugs within a high content screening workflow
2. Molecular and cell biological analysis
- PCR
- Gel electrophoresis
- Molecular cloning
- RNA/DNA extraction
- qRT-PCR
3. Assist with daily lab operations
- Assist in maintaining compliance with biological and chemical safety protocols
- Assist with inventory and procurement of lab supplies and reagents
Supervisory Relationships: This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the PI.
Qualifications
- A masters degree in a relevant field (e.g. engineering biology biochemistry) or related experience is required.
- Experience in cell culture is required.
- Strong communication and organizational skills are required.
- Diligence along with the ability and desire to maintain high quality records and safety standards are required.
- Experience in standard molecular biology techniques is preferred.
Required Experience:
