Job Description:

The University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance seeks an established or emerging dance professional to teach undergraduate courses in dance. The teaching focused position in a leading public research institution calls for teaching and service to be priorities for the employee. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in contemporary ballet practices contemporary dance and somatics and a pedagogical practice that is evolving codified techniques. The ability to teach ballet as foundational training to support a broad range of dance practices will be considered an asset complementing the candidates expertise in somatics and contemporary practice. We especially welcome candidates whose teaching explicitly integrates somatic inquiry within contemporary movement practices situating embodied knowledge within cultural historical and interdisciplinary contexts. Additional areas of teaching may include jazz improvisation digital media dance studies pedagogy or experiential anatomy/kinesiology.

This position calls for a teacher-artist whose creative research and choreographic practice informs their pedagogy and supports the Schools commitment to preparing students for wide-ranging professional trajectories in dance performance and creative practice.

  • Teach undergraduate curriculum-- all levels of Contemporary Ballet Practices Contemporary Dance Practices Dance Composition and Ensemble courses. Under the current curricula typical teaching assignments for lecturers in dance are 7-9 credits (3-4 courses) per semester.
  • Develop revise and deliver curriculum in Contemporary Dance and Contemporary Ballet Dance Practices.
  • Contribute to curricular efforts in other dance-related areas (could include choreography improvisation dance studies cultural studies dance pedagogy somatics dance and technology Experiential Anatomy/Dance Kinesiology and/or production among others including developing new Quest courses or existing General Education courses).
  • Cultivate and maintain a teaching research and service profile consistent with UF and unit guidelines for progress toward promotion for lecturers.
  • Active participation in our learning community finding innovative ways to connect the arts to critical discourses in other disciplines.
  • Participate in the dance season choreographing or providing artistic leadership for performances.
  • Advise BA and BFA senior projects.
  • Participate in shared governance through service to School College and University committees
  • Participate in effective student recruitment guidance and retention.

SCHOOL OF THEATRE DANCE: The light-filled Nadine McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion is home to the School of Theatre Dance (SoTD). The Schools international full-time faculty of 35 recognized artists and researchers complemented by adjunct and guest faculty and staff including full- and part-time professionals. The School offers MFA curricula in acting and in design which includes scene design lighting design and costume design; BFA programs in acting musical theatre and theatrical production with concentrations in costume digital media lighting scenic and sound; and a BA with concentrations in general theatre stage management and theatre management. The School features two degree programs in dance designed to develop the individual voice of the dance artist a BFA and a BA. Approximately 200 students major in the artistically diverse curricula of the School of Theatre Dance. Through its production program outreach and innovative programming the School of Theatre Dance provides multiple cultural opportunities annually to thousands of members of the University and the greater community. Expected Salary:

$58000-$63000 for Lecturer and $63500 - $67000 for Senior Lecturer based on qualifications and experience with a comprehensive and highly competitive leave and benefits package.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must meet all of the following

  • Terminal degree (MFA PhD or PhD ABD) in Dance or related fields or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience
  • Record of achievement or potential for record of achievement in the field at a national or international level in alignment with the units promotion criteria for lecturers
  • Evidence of successful collaboration and collegiality with faculty students and staff
  • Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity respect open intellectual discourse and the welcome incorporation and well-being of all in an environment of complex differences

Preferred

The successful candidate will meet some of the following

  • Terminal degree (MFA PhD or PhD ABD) in Dance
  • Teaching experience of 3 to 5 years beyond graduate assistantship at the university level
  • Evidence of a commitment to innovative and cross-disciplinary curricula
  • Demonstrated aptitude for working toward structural and strategic change
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective engagement in recruitment
