JOB TITLE:

Laboratory Technician II

JOB PURPOSE:

Supervise the operations of a designated laboratory; perform advanced diagnostic/research tests and services with complex analysis and interpretation of data; train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

The lab of Dr. Jessie Williamson in the Department of Zoology & Physiology is recruiting a Laboratory Technician to lead an NSF-funded research project to study evolution and eco-physiology of mountain hummingbirds. This position will supervise the daily operations of a biological research laboratory; generate molecular assays for field conditions; coordinate and design lab and field experiments; perform experiments and collect data in the lab and field; analyze and interpret data; and train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students.

*Please note: This is a one-year grant-funded position; possible extension is dependent on funding availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform tests analyze and interpret results of data collected or received from outside agencies or institutions.
  • Operate maintain and repair highly complex research instruments/equipment.
  • Communicate results of testing to internal and external clients.
  • Determine or develop appropriate advanced research methods and procedures to accomplish required goals.
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of results.
  • Instruct faculty staff and students in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; assist and instruct users in the interpretation of results.
  • Supervise the daily operations of a designated laboratory.
  • Design and implement diagnostic/research laboratory procedures for which precedents do not exist.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Complete lab forms and reports bill clients for services performed and assist in maintaining records and statistics.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies.
  • Participate in method development and research project design.
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures and standard operating procedures to ensure accuracy of results.
  • Determine or develop appropriate advanced research methods and procedures to accomplish required goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors degree in related life sciences field

Experience: 1-year work-related experience

Required licensure certification registration or other requirements:

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree related life sciences field
  • Previous experience (>1 year) working in and managing life sciences laboratory activities and personnel
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creativity
  • Fieldwork and/or bird handling experience in remote settings
  • Strong organization and commitment to detail
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to speak/write in Spanish
