About the opportunity

The Lapidary Technician will work within the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) within the School of Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing geological (rock and sediment) and other related samples for analytical analyses using existing methods within the CODES Analytical Laboratories (CAL).

CODES contributes to UTAS strategies of creating a zero-carbon economy and responding to the climate and ecological crisis through researching critical and strategic minerals. CAL maintain geoanalytical facilities for UTAS and provide analytical services for industry and government partners in Tasmania and beyond. This involves the search for and processing of strategic and critical metals that requires accurate determination of the mineralogical and chemical contents of geological samples. This position will help ensure that the Universitys strategy of safety being the foundation of everything we do.

What youll do:

  • Use existing equipment (rock saws lapping machines and polishing equipment) within the lapidary laboratory to prepare rock mounts thin sections and grain mounts.
  • Perform quality control of sample preparation and participate in improving existing sample-preparation techniques and controlling sample contamination issues.
  • Participate in lapidary training courses and conferences to maintain awareness in sample preparation techniques.
  • Contribute to the safe operation of the lapidary laboratory by maintaining safe practices; perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment; report all hazards incidents and near misses; occasionally induct and oversee staff and students on the safe use of lapidary equipment.
  • Assist the Manager CODES Analytical Laboratories and other CAL staff with tracking samples and maintaining maintenance records and consumable supplies.

What were looking for:

  • Experience cutting lapping and polishing rocks or similar skills.
  • Basic knowledge of rock and mineral properties (e.g. hardness cleavage and fracture).
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers including the use of spreadsheet and word processing software packages.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and demonstrated well-developed organisational and written skills.
  • Awareness in the management of WH&S issues involved in an analytical laboratory environment including safe operation of equipment clear training and induction processes promotion of a safety-first culture and continuous improvement with regards to WH&S.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 4 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $91488 comprising base salary within the range of $73814 to $78195 plus 17% superannuation.
