Description

Position Title: Operating Engineer.
Department: Facilities.
Classification: Non-Exempt.
FTE: 1.0.
Work Schedule: Varies; 40 hours per week Monday through Sunday shift assigned by Chief Engineer with occasional overtime as needed; this position is on-call for emergencies outside of regular working hours; travel to seminars up to 2-4 sessions per year as directed by the supervisor.
Work Location: On Campus.
Hourly Rate: $35 $44.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform safe and effective operation and maintenance of steam plant and chillers.
    • Manage operation of steam plant and conditioning chiller systems according to law through usage of a computer-based control system.
    • Perform routine maintenance on all operating equipment in the heating plant and tunnels.
    • Rebuild steam traps and pressure reducing station pilot valves and replace pump seals.
    • During chiller operation sweep tower cells and climb ladder to inspect the hot deck of the tower.
    • During winter operations assist in boiler conversion from natural gas to #2 fuel oil as required during curtailment periods.
    • Complete water tests.
    • Recharge chemical tanks.
    • Complete operating logs and chemical testing on boilers chillers condensate system chilled loops and Reverse Osmosis (RO) system.
    • Maintain boiler room physical condition: paint sweep mop etc.
  • Conduct heating plant inspection.
    • Inspect Equipment on a regular and continuous basis.
    • Assist in annual boiler and chiller inspections.
    • Update relieving engineer of changes in plant status.
    • Notify Chief Engineer of significant changes.
  • Record operating data.
    • Communicate the status of all equipment and duties performed in Engineers Log Book and communicate this information to the oncoming/off going Operating Engineer.
    • Transfer all needed data to new log sheets.
    • Report equipment failure and changes in machinery status.
  • Monitor Energy Management Systems (EMS).
    • Monitor EMS Computer.
    • Direct any alarms to proper department
  • Support respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds values and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
  • Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle.
  • Basic skills in using standard office equipment and computer applications including email word processing spreadsheet and database or willingness to learn.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

  • Reports to the Chief Engineer.
  • This position does not supervise staff or student workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; First Class B Stationary Engineer License.
  • Experience: 3 years work experience with boiler operation and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: First Class A Operating Engineer License.
  • Experience: Prior experience with a variety of power and hand tools.

  • Employment in this position is conditioned upon successful completion of a background check which may include: criminal background checks reference checks verification of work history verification of any required academic credentials licenses and/or certifications a motor vehicle check verification of DOT certification a credit check employment eligibility verification and/or a pre-employment physical. Whether a background check is deemed successfully completed will be at the sole discretion of St. Olaf College.
