The Opportunity

Monash University is seeking an exceptional leader to drive data governance and compliance within Project MAVERIC. Reporting to the Program Director this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the ethical and secure management of sensitive and research-critical data across a world-class program.

In this pivotal role you will:

  • Establish and lead comprehensive data governance frameworks ensuring the safe ethical and compliant use of clinical and sensitive data.
  • Develop and implement MAVERIC-specific compliance protocols aligned with regulatory legal and ethical standards (e.g. ISO27001 ISO42001).
  • Oversee data sharing agreements and partnerships ensuring obligations are met while enabling impactful research.
  • Design streamlined governance processes to accelerate responsible data access and reduce administrative overhead.
  • Guide the secure design and operation of MAVERICs data infrastructure including storage access transfer and disposal.
  • Provide expert advice on privacy consent anonymisation and ethical data stewardship to researchers and project teams.
  • Contribute strategically as a member of the MAVERIC senior leadership team assessing risks and shaping governance strategy.
  • Build governance capabilities and foster a culture of responsible research and innovation across all MAVERIC activities.

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Science IT Law or Data Governance with extensive relevant experience; or equivalent senior management experience in data governance and compliance.
  • Proven expertise in data governance and compliance frameworks within complex or research-intensive environments.
  • Strong knowledge of privacy security and protection standards and their application to research contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement governance policies and processes balancing compliance and research enablement.
  • Experience navigating regulatory and ethical requirements with practical expertise in consent anonymisation and risk mitigation.
  • Outstanding leadership and influencing skills with the ability to build consensus across diverse technical and academic stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking and project management skills with a proven ability to prioritise governance initiatives and deliver impactful outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with confidence in advising senior leaders and external partners.
