Job Summary

Located in Kent Washington Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting passivation cadmium and nickel zinc plating chromic sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies phenolics polyurethanes polyesters elastomerics intumescents lacquers alkyds acrylics dry-film lubricants and Teflon. Current approvals include the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP) Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company Boeing Defense and Space Boeing/Philadelphia Boeing Long Beach Grumman Gulfstream Lockheed Martin Goodrich Bombardier Cessna and Sikorsky among much else.

Founded in 1976 Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012 and became part of the Aerostructures Division. As a defense contractor Protective Coatings Inc. is registered with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls as a subsidiary of Precision Castparts Corp and is fully compliant with all relevant facets of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and the Export Administration Regulations.

Position Summary:

Candidates for NDT Inspector Level 2 will possess the skills and knowledge to perform all the duties of a trainee and can also independently inspect parts make evaluations perform required process tests and document results. Selected candidates as a Level 2 Inspector will be expected to perform evaluations on parts produced using fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) techniques or fluorescent magnetic particle inspection (MAG) to determine and detect defects that may compromise the integrity or quality of the part. The Level 2 may direct the work of a Trainee and assist them in moving through the established Level 2 qualification and certification process. Candidates must be self-disciplined and self-motivated individuals with strong accountability (attention to details) skills. Candidates must have the ability and desire to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced production environment be resourceful and innovative along with presenting a strong business ethic and compliance to leadership and company policies and a good communicator with the ability to represent the company in a positive manner. A Level 2 candidate will be expected to perform a variety of tasks which include but are not limited to: non-inspection functions in preparation for inspections performing specific calibrations tests and evaluations on production aerospace parts develop procedures and establish techniques (i.e. technique cards) for Level 3 approval and other tasks and training assigned by the Level 3 Inspector for further opportunity in advancing a career in NDT Inspection.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Examines parts under fluorescent or black lighting to detect surface defects under the direction of a Level 3 NDT Inspector using one of two methods: FPI (Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection) or (MAG) Magnetic Particle Inspection.
  • Reviewing and assimilating work instructions relating to cleaning etching dwell/develop operations inspection criteria and record results.
  • Provide detailed information concerning processing techniques findings evaluation of indications and part condition/disposition recommendations.
  • Set up and calibrate equipment conduct tests using equipment and interpret evaluate and document inspection results.
  • Perform receiving inspections (before processing) as needed and immediately report any damage or discrepancy.
  • Cleaning and etching of production parts in preparation for inspections.
  • Application and removal of Fluorescent Penetrant Dye dwell and develop processing in preparation for black light and white light inspections.
  • Perform other assigned non-inspection functions such as racking masking or cleaning of production parts and provide training of such duties to Trainees and Level 1-limited Operators.
  • Assist with (and perform as required) in internal and external system audits and CAPA (Corrective Action/Preventative Action) implementation.
  • Will require use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during certain tasks (goggles safety glasses aprons boots gloves hearing protection etc) and be expected to comply with safety directives and policy.
  • Will be exposed to chemicals/solvents and occasional fumes wet/humid conditions low-level lighting and moderate noise level.
  • Will at times require heavy lifting or use of mechanical hoist for the aid in lifting objects.
  • Work closely with inspectors and area leadership to complete work and prioritize tasks.
  • Clean organize and maintain work area as prescribed by supervision.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to independently perform all the duties of an NDT Helper (entry level position) and Level 1-Limited Operator.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision color vision and peripheral vision. The ability to successfully pass a Jaeger eye exam with corrected or uncorrected vision.
  • Familiarity of codes standards and specification such as NAS 410 BSS 7698 and BAERD GEN-012.
  • Blueprint reading and interpretation skills pertaining to aerospace production detail parts and sub-assemblies.
  • Basic mathematic skills: add subtract multiply and divide using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods with limited movement.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work alone or as a member of a team good cooperative skills.
  • Ability to read write and communicate in English. Specifically applicants must be able to read and understand written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple priorities.
  • Must be fluorescent magnetic particle inspection certified

Required Experience:

  • Experience relative to (1) year minimum specific to non-inspection functions of the NDT department as an NDT Helper in the entry level position.
  • Formal and Practical training is required for FPI and MAG Inspection (or both). Minimum (400) hours FPI practical experience and/or (530) hours MAG Inspection practical experience necessary and 32 hours formal training in either FPI or MAG inspection.

Level of Education:

  • General Standard education including the ability to read and write in English.
  • Level 2 NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Certification from the previous employer for each NDT method practiced is required.

Note: Prior training and experience of acquired Level 2 Inspection status must be verified and documented in writing by the previous employer or training agency. Any claimed training and experience which cannot be verified and documented shall be considered invalid and applicant must require additional training as recommended by the Responsible Level 3. All previous training must be verified by the Responsible Level 3. Selected candidates shall be subjected to examinations administered by the Responsible Level 3 at the time of hire to verify the physical and technical qualifications of the NDT candidate. Exams will consist of a vision test a general exam a specification exam and a practical examination.
