Job Summary:

The Library Service Specialist at CSUSB Libraries will oversee Student Assistant activities and daily operations for the Service Desk (Circulation) in addition to supporting other Access Services functions.

Responsibilities:

Student Assistant Lead:

Assists with hiring training scheduling directing work providing input into performance evaluations and reporting time for student assistants in Access Services. Also includes assigning monitoring and providing guidance for student assistant special projects. Maintains and updates workflows and daily operations for Service Desk and Circulation operations in coordination with Access Services faculty lead and Access Services unit collaboration with Service Desk staff and Reference Librarians maintains an effective student assistant training program including maintaining customer service handbook and guidelines.

Access Services Lead:

Works collaboratively with Access Services and other Library personnel to provide effective library services. Will support and act as Lead staff in one or more Access Services functional areas specifically for the Service Desk and including: collection maintenance; course reserves; resource sharing; collaborative development of policy procedures and workflows; statistical reports for Access Services; and enforcement of library policies and procedures.

As Service Desk Lead provides expert and outstanding customer service to all patrons. Contributes through regular shift at the Service Desk answering questions during business hours providing basic information services utilizing OneSearch (Primo) library guides and campus resources. Uses Alma-Fulfillment modules to troubleshoot and resolve patron-related circulation tasks such as renewals placing holds fines/fees and patron record updates.

Contributes to unit planning by applying expertise in operations policies and best practices. Collaborates with appropriate library and university personnel to troubleshoot and resolve customer service issues mitigate unusual occurrences and support emergency situations.

Follows a Tuesday Saturday schedule during fall and spring semesters responsible for opening and closing procedures on Saturdays. During intersessions and summer months work schedule shifts to Monday - Friday. Supports extended hours as directed and provides backup staffing during evenings weekends absences or busy periods.

Assists with day-to-day ILL operations and supports resource sharing processes in the absence of the Head Interlibrary Loan and/or other ILL staff.

Other Classification-Related Duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a high school education or equivalent certification
  • Two years of related library and/or clerical experience required

Required Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures and an in-depth knowledge of library operations policies and procedures pertaining to assigned functional area including a solid understanding of individual work functions and the ability to adapt work procedures.
  • Working knowledge of library collection and its organization as well as classification schemes. Demonstrated expertise in creating and correcting bibliographic records.
  • Thorough knowledge of external on-line databases system and resources including the ability to perform complex on-line searches.
  • Thorough knowledge of institutions and librarys policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Working knowledge of national standards pertaining to library operations including a thorough knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to interpret and apply them as well as explain them to patrons to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in using library automated system(s) especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area including database maintenance.
  • Ability to investigate and research more complex problems including analyzing and interpreting information.
  • Working knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures and allocation processes and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in handling vendor accounts and the budget process.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to prepare internal library reports and written and visual presentations on library resources and present them to library patrons including students.
  • Strong communication and interpretive skills to be able to interview patrons regarding their information needs and guide them in the use of more complex library and on-line resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection training employees in new work procedures assigning work organizing work flow and establishing priorities reviewing work providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness. Working knowledge of campus human resource practices and payroll procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in assigned area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education equivalent to a bachelors degree.
  • Significant experience providing customer service.
  • Two or more years of experience in one or more functional areas in an academic library setting (access services resource sharing reserves etc.).
  • Four years of related library and/or clerical experience preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4162 per month maximum

Classification Salary Range: $4162 - $7673 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
